STAR/TRIBUNE
LONDON - Amy Winehouse drank herself to death. That was the ruling of a coroner's inquest into the death of the Grammy-winning soul singer, who died with empty vodka bottles in her room and lethal amounts of alcohol in her blood — more than five times the British drunk driving limit.
Coroner Suzanne Greenaway gave a verdict of "death by misadventure," saying Wednesday the singer suffered accidental alcohol poisoning when she resumed drinking after weeks of abstinence.
"The unintended consequence of such potentially fatal levels (of alcohol) was her sudden and unexpected death," Greenaway said.
The 27-year-old Winehouse had fought a very public battle with drug and alcohol abuse for years, and there had been much speculation that she died from a drug overdose. But a pathologist said the small amount of a drug prescribed to help her cope with the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal had nothing to do with her death.
Instead, a resumption of heavy drinking killed the singer, best-known for her tall beehive hairdos and Grammy-winning album "Back to Black." A security guard found Winehouse dead in bed at her London home on July 23.
"She's made tremendous efforts over the years," said Dr. Christina Romete, who had treated Winehouse. But "she had her own way and was very determined to do everything her way."
Winehouse gave up illicit drugs in 2008, but had swerved between heavy alcohol use and abstinence for a long time, Romete said. The singer had resumed drinking in the days before her death after staying away from alcohol for most of July, she said.
Romete said she warned Winehouse of the dangers of alcoholism. "The advice I had given to Amy over a long period of time was verbal and in written form about all the effects alcohol can have on the system, including respiratory depression and death, heart problems, fertility problems and liver problems," she said.
Winehouse joins a long list of celebrities who died after fighting alcohol problems, including jazz great Billie Holiday, AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott, film legend Richard Burton, writers Dylan Thomas and Jack Kerouac, and country music pioneer Hank Williams.
Police Detective Inspector Les Newman said three empty vodka bottles — two large and one small — were found in her bedroom.
Pathologist Suhail Baithun said blood and urine samples indicated Winehouse had consumed a "very large quantity of alcohol" prior to her death. The level of alcohol in her blood was 416 milligrams per 100 milliliters, he said — a blood alcohol level of 0.4 percent. The British and U.S. legal drunk-driving limit is 0.08 percent.

I think this only remember us that every excess is bad, the alcohol is not a bad thing, if you know how to drink it, but most of the people just don't realize that and drink untill they're drunk, or like Amy.. drink untill the dead, just like many other singers that because of the pressure think they are going to solve their problems drinking when the only think they do is make it worst. And if you have any type of problem I think drinking and trying to run away from them is the most coward thing you can do, instead of facing them.

Amy Winehouse was a legend. She was a phenomenal artist who has performed with many greats such as Tony Bennett and Mark Ronson. She had everything going for her, she was beautiful, talented, and an idol person with just one major flaw, fame. I think alcoholism is a horrible addiction, but even moreso, fame. The thing that I believe drove Amy Winehouse and many other famous celeberties into horrible rollercoaster battles with drugs and alcohol. All the pressure that someone in the limelight faces can drive them to do crazy things like Amy Winehouse, unfortunetly, learned so early in life. It's horrible to see such young talent wasted, but it should be a lesson learned to all the young people who looked up to her like myself. Be smart and always put your choices before your fame.

I agree with Molly, she was a legend. The one thing I don't get, is why do people with such great talents have to ruin them with alcohol or drugs. What some people need to realize, is that if they get addicted to drugs or alcohol it will have deadly effects on them at some point in time or another. You would also think that people would learn lessons from incidents like these, some do and some don't.

Amy Winehouse had a flourishing career and many things going for her. These things however were threatened by her usage of drugs and addiction to alcohol. I believe that if she would have maintained a healthy life style she would have been a better role model and in return would have gained more fans. However, this was not the case. Amy let her addictions get the best of her and drank herself to death. This is an obviously unfortunate situation, but we should take more away from it than just grief. People of all ages (over 21) should remember what happened to Amy Winehouse any time they choose to drink and debate the consequences of their actions.

I agree with Anna,if she had a healthy life style then she would have become a better role model. I don't get why people drink until there drunk its just so sad. I think its okay though to have a couple drinks but not get drunk.

All artists get stressed out, but they need to learn to be responsible about it. Amy Winehouse wasn't. She definitely needed help. It's hard to believe she isn't alive anymore because she was so talented, and young! Like the previous people said on this article, she had a lot going for her, if she would have realized she had a problem, things would have turned out better for her.

There is one thing I don't understand: You do not die from a alcohol level of 0.4. 4.0 - yes, sure, I could understand it. But 0.4?! Not a chance. Im not saying anybody is lying, but alcohol is not the only reason. Drugs, the stress from being famous, as well as living up to the image she build her fame around. And of course: Money. Are you rich and famous only very few people is gonna give you a no - almost no matter what the question is.

Amy Winehouse was an amazing person. It's sad that she couldn't control herself, which caused her to die from alcohol and drugs. If she would of thought about her actions, she could of been a better role model. Over-dosing and drinking alcohol will not solve any of your problems.

I agree with Savannah, all artists get stressed out and need something to help them out. Many things being on the lines of alcohol and drugs. Others possibly being a hobby to get them cooled down from a hard day at work. Amy was a great idol for many people, but she made wrong choices.

I think Mikkel is right. But I mean when you are drinking for such a long time like Amy, I mean she was famous for a few years and when she started for example right at the beginning since her career began it was a long time. And so just a little bit alcohol can kill you. But the point that is shocking me the most is what a career can do to you. It is not just Amy a lot of stars had and have these problems.

She should have taken better care of herself. Also she should be trying to set a good example for other people and children. While she could have just drank water or juice or even pop.

I agree with Savannah and Cheyenne. Sometimes you just can't see clear if you have problems of a lot stress. I think Amy had some problems we din't even know about, so i don't want to judge her. But I think she made lots of wrong choices. I think it was wrong of her to take that many drugs. If she would just have tested them it'D have been something different but she went to rehab several times , and got back to it again and again. She had to knew that she'd destroy her life and her carrier with that but she continued. If she really wanted to stop, i think she would have been able to because she was a strong woman. Besides I think it's kinda a good thing, that they found out, that she died because of alcohol. Because everybody always thought it was because of the drugs she was using so much. So I think it's kinda ironic that it wasn't that what killed her, bur the alcohol. Guess that's one more example, that you shouldn't use things too much, to often. Whether it's alcohol or drugs. Everything which can be harmless in small amounts can be deadly in big amounts.
ReplyDeleteLike alot of people stated on the comment thread, Miss Winehouse could've definately taken care of herself better. She could've had an amazing career. Flourishing albums and loyal fans. But no - she put it all on the line for what? Illegal substances and alcohol. Why? Again, as most people stated, she was stressed. Being an artist and in the line of fame has got to be a demanding life choice. But she could've handled herself differently. Counceling, Yoga, Anything BUT alcohol and drugs. Her death was nothing anyone could've prevented. She wasn't going to change for herself. So what's the point in changing for others? It was her choice and she was the one to suffer the consequence.

ReplyDeleteI think its sad that Amy Winehouse drank alcohol til she died. I think she got into drugs and drinking because of stress. She should have gotten help with her addictions rather than doing it on her own.
