Romney and Santorum in near dead-heat in Iowa; Ron Paul close behind

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) -- Mitt Romney has defeated Rick Santorum in the Iowa caucuses by eight votes, clinching what appears to be the closest-ever margin of victory in a Republican presidential contest, the state Republican Party said early Wednesday.

Ron Paul finished a close third, according to the state GOP. Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who placed fifth, said late Tuesday that he would return to his home state to consider whether his campaign would continue.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, had 30,015 votes. Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania and an upstart challenger who just weeks ago polled in the single digits, had 30,007, the state GOP said.

Each had roughly 25% of the vote in Iowa, the first state to vote in the 2012 presidential caucus and primary season. Paul, a U.S. representative from Texas, had 21%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was at 13%. Perry was at 10%, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota had 5%, and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman had 1%.

The focus of the race now shifts to New Hampshire, which holds its primary election next Tuesday.

  1. I think that they shouldn't give up on it. I also think its a good thing because they might not be able to afford it. I also think if you don't think your going to make it why bother trying.

  2. A response to MacKenzie's comment; Why quit trying even if you don't think you're going to make it? Giving up is the easy way out. Different oppinions belong to different states. Maybe one state is for Newt Gingrich, and another could be for Jon Huntsman?

  3. Even if Iowa is a big part of getting elected there are 49 other states that also have opinions. Every state is going to be different in who they favor. Rick Perry might be the top choice for 20 states but if he quits he doesn't know what the outcome might have been. Why put that much effort out and then be done?

  4. I think that Mitt Romney could possibly win thanks to getting the most support in the Iowa caucuses. If he gets the nomination I think he could stand a good chance against Obama. But Obama has already won once, who says he can't win again.

  5. I think that Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are equally match competitors. Both of them would be a match for Obama. Which ever one of them wins the primary elections will be up against Obama for the title of president.

  6. I think that those candidates such as, Rick Perry, should try and stay in the race. In my opinion, just because you didn't do well in one state there are still 49 states that want to express who they want to run for President. I don't see how one state can scare somebody into quitting their campaign, when there are plenty of states left.

  7. I don't think that any of the people running for president should be giving up quite yet! Things are just getting started and if they are already willing to let all of their hard work go then that is extremely crazy. However, if they are wanting to give up it would probably be best for them to end their campaign now. We need someone in office who is completely committed to their country. These caucuses allow us to see who is fully dedicated to their job.

  8. I agree with Barrett and Elle, Even though Rick Perry didn't do well in one state, there are still plenty other states that can help him makeup for Iowa. Yes it would not be very fun to not do your best in one state, but like said, there are 49 other states that have there opinions on who they would like to run for president.

  9. i agree with paige and Jimmy. Why quit trying when can try harder. Quitting is the easy way out of things and you should never take the easy way. Also with what jimmy said whoever makes it will be a great competitor against Obama. If i were one of these guys i would never consider quitting just put more effort and try acheive more out of it.

  10. it will all have to come down to the end and it is still anybodies game. I think that they should stop spending so much money and start getting to the stuff the people want to hear. the people want to hear about how they are going to fix the economy.

  11. If you don't win over one state, who says you can't win over another? Why should you give up on something at the beginning? I think Rick Perry should have kept trying, there were possibilities that he could have won.
