(CNN) -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed off on a bill that will prevent abortion providers like Planned Parenthood from receiving public funds in most cases, her office said.
"This is a common sense law that tightens existing state regulations and closes loopholes in order to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund abortions, whether directly or indirectly," the governor said in a statement.
"By signing this measure into law, I stand with the majority of Americans who oppose the use of taxpayer funds for abortion," Brewer said.
Kansas, North Carolina and Texas have enacted similar legislation, while Indiana, New Jersey and Wisconsin have used their budget processes to bar funding for abortion providers, according to her office.
Before Brewer signed the bill into law, the political arm of Planned Parenthood Arizona slammed the measure, which it says will put the health of thousands at risk.
Besides operating clinics where abortions are performed, Planned Parenthood provides a range of health services including cancer screenings, birth control, vaccinations, sexual health education and health counseling.
"Many in the legislature will never know what it's like to feel a lump in their breast and have to worry about the cost of a doctor's visit," said Bryan Howard, president and chief executive of Planned Parenthood Arizona.
"This is the reality with which many Arizona women are faced, at the hands of a legislature determined to reduce access to prevention care while pursuing its ideological political agenda," he said.

I think that it's wrong to fund something that kills human beings. It is wrong that the program is showing the idea of abortion to people that are first comers. The funding should go to a program that help families that are struggling to raise a child.

I believe that abortion is wrong. I agree that the funding should stop for that. Although, these Planned Parenthood classes also provide funding for screening clinics and vaccinations. These, I think, are good aspects of it. Why stop funding that? It wouldn't make sense to me to stop the funding for these programs. In my opinion, the funding should continue for screening, vaccinations, and etc.

I completely agree that funding for abortions in planned parenthoods needs to be cut. I refuse to pay for an irrisponible teenager to have an abortion, regardless of the circumstances. I am 98% pro-life. But that's a different argument. Screenings for breast cancer & ovarian cancer from these clinics have saved many lives, and without this funding women wouldn't have had these life-saving tests. I'm not clear on how the planned parenthoods are funded, but maybe they could cut funding just for abortions.

I both agree and disagree with this. Yes abortion is wrong, no doubt about it. But what if a young girl is raped? You can't say that if you were in her position you would want to carry your child's rapist for 9 months. I'm not saying I agree with abortions at all, because I'm against them. But think about if a girl is raped by a family member. That child is going to be mentally and physically handicapped. He would never have a normal life. I think the only way abortions should be funded is if a girl is honestly raped and has filed a police report and it can be proven. But the rest of what plan a parenthood is great and funding for it should continue.
