Washington (CNN) -- An energized electorate inspired by a groundbreaking election and expectations as high as Mount Everest had grown accustomed to greeting him with spontaneous chants of "yes we can."
He promised to take "bold, swift action" on the ailing economy and break the partisan grip on Washington by ending what he called "petty grievances and false promises."
"There are some who question the scale of our ambitions, who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans," the president told the nation during his inaugural address in 2009. "Their memories are short, for they have forgotten what this country has already done."
This high bar assured there would be a very long to-do-list, and some Republicans were quick to publicly admit they would not make his job easy. But some political observers make the case that pushing a lot of promises was a necessity for an unproven freshman senator.
"He really needed to prove himself to a lot of individual Democratic constituencies," said Bill Adair, the creator and editor of PolitiFact, an online site best known for rating the truth in campaign advertisements. "He made dozens and dozens of small but very narrow promises."
PolitiFact evaluated 508 promises and concluded that the president has kept 37% of them, compromised on 14% of them, has broken 16% of them, has gotten stalled on 10% of them and 22% are still "in the works."
One big stumble came soon after the president took office. During an interview on the CBS program "60 Minutes," Obama had said he intended to "close Guantanamo" and vowed to "follow through on that."
But legal hurdles and resistance in Congress neutralized his executive order to close the detention facility within a year.
Another promise that ran into a wall on Capitol Hill was the vow to repeal Bush-era tax cuts for the very rich.
And with homeowners trying to recover from a crippling mortgage crisis, especially in states such as Nevada and Florida, a promised $10 billion dollar foreclosure prevention fund never materialized.
"He made some really sweeping promises about changing the culture of Washington, about bringing the parties together, about being more transparent in how he runs the White House," Adair said. "He ran into trouble there. There's been a real realization on the part of the White House that some of the things he said during the 2008 campaign were just not realistic given the way Washington really works."
The very long list goes on: No comprehensive immigration reform. No cap and trade system that regulates pollution emissions.
Some of these broken promises provide critics with plenty of fodder to argue he has been ineffective. But the White House views his bucket of promises as half-full.
Health care reform. Check. Auto industry bailout. Check. "Don't ask don't tell," the policy that banned openly gays and lesbians from serving in the military, repealed. Check.
The Obameter Scorecard also gives the president a thumbs up on national security.
In 2008 while visiting Jordan, the president vowed to end the war in Iraq. "My goal is to no longer have U.S. troops engaged in combat in Iraq." That promise was fulfilled in December.
Added to that is that the conflict in Afghanistan is winding down and the world's most-wanted terrorist, Osama bin Laden, is dead. "The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al Qaeda" the president said as he broke the news in a hastily arranged late-night Sunday address to the nation in May 2011.
Between now and Election Day, it's possible other promises stuck in the works could go either way, although campaigning has consumed much of the oxygen. Adair said there is plenty of blame to go around.
Congress has created some impassable barriers but at the same time, he argues other promises were "low-hanging fruit" that the president could have accomplished through executive action but so far hasn't delivered.

Obama's report card was a solid c-. Saying that, we did bring down bin Laden, but the medicare he made, is full off bee wax.

DeleteI also think his heath insurance may have some errors, but things can be fixed, just like amendments made to the constitution.
DeleteI think Obama deserved a C because he didn't make up his promises. Then again it wasn't all his fault. The government wouldn't let him do most of the promises because they don't want him to be president next time. Most people like Republicans and Obama is a Democrat. So you could say they didn't play fairly.

ReplyDeleteWell I feel that Americans will always find something to complain about. Before we had Obama, we were complaining about our troops not getting to come home and about being so terrified of terrorists. Bin Laden is dead and the war in Iraq is over. I think Obama gets an A+
ReplyDeleteI dont like obama because he is not keeping his promises. He made more promises then he could keep.Need another president who will keep there promises.
ReplyDeleteAshleyOttop2
Obama only kept some of his promises. If your going to make promises at least keep them. The only good thing that came out of Obama being president was he kill Osama Bin Laden.
ReplyDeleteMany, many, many. GREAT things came from Obama's recent time in office. Imagine if you were given 4 years to get our country out of debt, to pick up all mistakes that prior presidents made. Yes, Obama also mad mistakes, but he also did many great things for America. He brought home mothers, fathers, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and children back to there families. 4 years is such a short time span, and yes we do elect new president every four years, but I believe that he should be given 4 more years because he has really done a lot to protect our country from danger and many financial problems. Obama deserves a A- because yes, he didn't fulfill all of his promises, but he did a great job accomplishing the ones he did. I think Obama could do so much more for us if he is given 4 more years in office.

ReplyDeleteI think Obama should get a c. He didn't keep all of his promises some of that wasw not all his fault but i think he could have tried harder. He should not have made a whole bunch of promises that he was not sure he could keep. I also agree with bryanna about Osama Bin Ladan, that was one of the very few good things.

Obama didn't kill Osama Bin Ladan, the navy seals did, he gave the attack the ok. and if this is all that was good why should we re-elect him?

Obama, Obama, Obama...
ReplyDeleteIn keeping promises if anybody should have an A+ it should be him. He is the leader of AMERICA.
If he had to make promises, he should make ones he can keep. Not ones he has to comprimise, sweep under the rug, or just get distracted from.
If you lead anything greater than a class of pre-schoolers, you should be responsible enough to make a promise you can keep and keep the promises you make, otherwise you'd have a lotta people hating you...

Obama will just keep saying that he will keep the promises but we all know that he will just say something like "I will do it" or "I will get right on it." Ever since he became the president of our country he has made little changes. I would like to see if Obama can make a big difference in one of the promises that he promised. I hope he realized that he has a 50% chance in being the president again. Obama should wake up and start answering promises.

Obama has not fulfilled the promises he's made. He's kept only 37 percent of the promises. He shouldn't be president again.
ReplyDeleteJerlynW p7
I think he deserves at least a B+. EVERY presidential candidate make promises and usually not a huge percentage of those promises are kept. It's kind of hard to get things done when people are supposed to be helping pass laws but are more focused on dissing the people who don't agree with them. Obama has lead some many major milestones for our country and with how much arguing it takes to get one thing through congress he's done well with focusing on 37% of what he promised to do. I think he's deserves another 4 years to finish what he's started I mean he obviously isn't done.

I think Obama deserves a C because he has kept some of his smaller promises, but not a lot of the bigger promises. People may think that it was Republicans fault, but Democrats had the majority vote in the House of Reps. and the Senate. Also Bush was the one that had the task forces looking for bin Laden before Obama was ever the president all he said was do it when he was found, which I think most of us would have said the same thing. Also he plains everything on the Bush administrators and policies, but if anything he "does right" he takes full credit even if it was truly the Bush's administrators and policies.
