There are a few things you can usually expect out of an NFL halftime show. A debate about gun control isn't one of them.
But Sunday wasn't a normal day in the NFL. It was two days after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins, his girlfriend and the mother of his child, before killing himself outside the front door of the Chiefs' practice facility.
It was shocking. And it was expected that this tragedy would seep through into Sunday's football coverage.
But many people were not expecting Bob Costas to make a plea for gun control.
During halftime of NBC's "Sunday Night Football," Costas blamed the nation's gun culture for what happened between Belcher and his girlfriend, remarks that set off a heated debate about whether the sportscaster should have launched into what some called a "rant" on gun control.
Here's a transcript of Costas' comments:
"Well, you know that it was coming. In the aftermath of the nearly unfathomable events in Kansas City, that most mindless of sports clichés was heard yet again: Something like this really puts it all in perspective.
Well, if so, that sort of perspective has a very short shelf life since we will inevitably hear about the perspective we have supposedly again regained the next time ugly reality intrudes upon our games. Please, those who need tragedies to continually recalibrate their sense of proportion about sports would seem to have little hope of ever truly achieving perspective.
You want some actual perspective on this? Well, a bit of it comes from a Kansas City based-writer, Jason Whitlock, with whom I do not always agree but who today said it so well today that we may as well as quote or paraphrase from the end of his article.
‘Our current gun culture,' Whitlock wrote, '... ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenaged boys bloody and dead. ...
'Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.'
In the coming days, Jovan Belcher's actions and their possible connections to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."
Costas' remarks seemed to send the Internet into an immediate feeding frenzy. Was it appropriate for him to talk about a political issue during a sports show? What is the right forum for this kind of discussion? Was he only saying what everyone else was already thinking?

I think Jovan Belcher shouldn't have killed himself and his girlfriend. That is just really stupid for someone to do that to their loved one.I think they should have more control of a gun.To be honest with you I don't think he should've had a gun and I would rather have someone beat me up instead of shooting me for no reason, because if I didn't do anything wrong I don't want to be shot.People these days should have more common sense then that or really they should not have a gun with them!!!!!

No matter what you do, people will always do stupid thing, it's just in are nature. It really depends on how much control you have over yourself, after all you or we are the shepherd's of your own choices.

I agree with Chelsey that Jovan Belcher shouldn't have shot himself and his girlfriend.I think that Joven Belcher shouldn't have had a hand gun. If he did not have that gun at the game he and his girlfriend would still be alive.

I just don't understand why he would take hers and his life away? That's just plain stupid. I also don't get why they sell out hand guns now. If they didn't he'd probably be alive right now having an argument with her. Way better then being dead.

I don't get it. You took someone you love life's away over a stupid fight then kill yourself cause you knew you did the biggest mistake in your life. But the worst of all, that child now doesn't have a mother or father. That child is going ask why did this happen to her all the time and some-nights she would stay thinking was this because of me? did I kill them? And now the worst part of all is. When she gets older, her child won't have grandparents.
ReplyDeleteNow the part of about the handguns. I think we don't need them. Reason is, Cause kids are now getting held of them. Knew one child kill himself. He was 4. His father left the gun on the table. He pull the gun off the table, gun went off and hit in the chest, EMS couldn't stop the bleeding. Die on the table. Now Gangs our getting hold M4's, AK47's, Snipe Riflers and drugs. It's getting sicking of people dieing over these stupid things. Over using drugs, taking piles while parting, now a child doesn't have parents to help her learn life the right way. Can't have game nights. Can't have her have her guy in her life to ask her father for his permisson to marrier his doughter. Never will have that.

I also agree with the first part of you're story tappe but the part about the gang is a little different. Gang's are going to get there hands on those kind's of weapons anyway, and what are we going to do if they did have a stockpile of weapons. We would'nt go in and start killing mexicans. Would we?

I think it was very stupid of Jovan Belcher to kill his girlfriend and himself. If he wasn't happy he shouldn't have killed her. if he was that unhappy he should have either broke up with her or killed himself , but why would you kill yourself is what i don't get.

I think that it's stupid how Jovan Belcher killed his wife, but why did he end up shooting his loved one. There has to be a reason why he did. Then again he could have lost his mind over an argument and shot her.

I think that it was unnecessary for Bob Costas to speak about his opinion on NATIOINAL TELEVISION. I would not have had a problem if he did it when there was not a big television audience, but because there was his comments anger me. I think that it was wrong for him to speak his opinion.

I agree that it was extremely dumb and horrible and idiotic that Jovan Belcher killed himself and his wife. If he was going to kill himself at least spare his wife, because their kid will probably be pretty tramatized, (unless the family had really horrible relationships with one another). Also people, please stop blaming the gun for the murder, he could have just as easily used a knife to murder his wife and himself, and downright banning hand-guns would cause gun-related incidents to skyrocket. Do you really think that criminals would stop using guns just because they're illegal? Really! That would just send up a signal flare, "Look we're defenseless, weakling Americans, ransack us!" True this is a horrible incident. True there are people who disregard life in this world. Since when have there not been people who will abuse power? It isn't the weapon's fault that Belcher used it for death. If you want to blame something/someone blame Jovan Belcher.

I agree with Alyssa about how banning hand-guns wouldn't be the solution and that he could have used anything to kill his girlfriend. However, I don't agree with it when she said that we should blame Jovan Belcher for this. People that commit suicide don't understand what they are doing and what effect that could bring upon. Why they kill other people is definitely a good question, but like I said they aren't in their right mind. He probably didn't realize what kind of trauma this could bring upon his kid, and maybe he thought his wife would want to be with him. These questions could go completely unanswered due to the fact that we aren't able to ask the people themselves. Blaming it on them just doesn't make sense to me though, but it also shouldn't be blamed on gun control. Maybe in cases like this we shouldn't point our fingers anywhere, but deal with the circumstances in a respectful manner.
DeleteThat's a good point Alyssa. Just making guns illegal wouldn't really work because the people who don't care about following the law would still get a hold of them anyway, and the people who do follow laws would be defenseless. I think more crimes would be committed as a result of a gun ban instead of less crimes. There's really no easy or quick solution to this problem. It's a tough one... I just hope we as a country don't to something stupid that will endanger more innocent people and their loved ones.
