Mike Huckabee: Newtown Shooting No Surprise, We've 'Systematically Removed God' From Schools

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (R) weighed in on the massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. on Friday, saying the crime was no surprise because we have "systematically removed God" from public schools.

"We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we have systematically removed God from our schools," Huckabee said on Fox News. "Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage?"

This line of reasoning isn't new for Huckabee.

Speaking about a mass shooting in Aurora, Colo. over the summer, the former GOP presidential candidate claimed that such violent episodes were a function of a nation suffering from the removal of religion from the public sphere.

"We don't have a crime problem, a gun problem or even a violence problem. What we have is a sin problem," Huckabee said on Fox News. "And since we've ordered God out of our schools, and communities, the military and public conversations, you know we really shouldn't act so surprised ... when all hell breaks loose."

Adam Lanza, 20, is the suspect in a school shooting that left 27 dead Friday, including 20 children. Lanza is reportedly the son of a teacher at the school where the shootings occurred.

  1. I think it was bad that Adam Lanza killed twenty children and his mom in her own bed. I agree with Mike Huckabee on teaching kids right from wrong. If Adam Lanza did not have a gun or get a hold of a gun none of the people and kids would not be dead right now.

  2. I think it's just plain horrible how some 20 year old can just walk into an Elementary school and start shooting at innocent kids. People are insane now a days.. It also sucked because all these adults or teachers died from trying to help their kids stay alive. People should not have guns like that. They shouldn't have given him a gun made for the army with out a license.

  3. The shooting was awful, let me say that first. Next, let me point out how WRONG Huckabee is. To blame this terrible incident on a 'lack of God' in our schools is ridiculous. I don't believe my God would ever will these poor children to be ruthlessly murdered by a depressed and emotionally abused young adult. Things like this happen not because of anything we as a society have said or done, but because this type of thing just.. happens. There has to be a way to fix this problem but the problem itself has nothing to do with God. The use of the deaths of 20 children to further your political agenda is absolutely ludacris and Huckabee should get a reality check.

  4. Its pretty sad all these parents are going to have to go through christmas without there children. I can't imagine what it will be like waking up and not having your children with you. This is aweful. I agree with david how it is aweful that anyone can just waltz into a school and shoot a bunch of defenceless children. At the same time its also really sad how we have to feel so unsafe in our schools. This world will always be full of people who are out to get us.

  5. This shooting makes me worry about my neices and nephews in school. This time of year I shouldn't have to worry about it! I can't beleive how easy it is for someone to just walk into a school and shoot a bunch of children. But at the same time I can see why it is. Because no one expects it will happen! I feel so bad for the parents.. I cant imagine what it would be like to have presents but no kids..

  6. Shooting schools needs to stop right now. It's kids. They had their hole life look ahead. Doesn't matter if your mad or getting bully. These are kids we're talking about. This is getting sick. Needs to stop now.

  8. People are crazy that's an under statement, but I wounder what was the cause that made him snap to do such a thing. Killing children, that's just down right twisted. To take away a child's future with a pull of a trigger. Something like can never be justified. I do not hope for Adam Lanza's punishment, but hope for those he killed may rest in peace.

  9. I think that people shouldn't have a gun or guns if they are going to shoot and kill people, who had the right to live a life and I just think about those children who were in that school. They didn't even get to grow up and live a life and graduate from high school and they didn't even get to go to college to get a good degree and they won't be able to get their own family. That is just sad for someone to do that,he killed his mother....THAT IS JUST WRONG for him to do that.I hope all the people he killed should rest in peace and not be disturbed.

  10. No thanks. When I want God I go to church. When I want education I go to school. It's best that way for everyone, Christian, atheist, or whatever they are. Let's keep it that way, instead of throwing out the establishment clause of the First Amendment. Our founding fathers clearly thought separation of church and state was one of the most important parts of liberty, because it is the first thing they mention in the bill of rights. Conservatives are very vocally against big government... until it comes to ramming their beliefs down other people's throats that is.

  11. I don't think it's about whether we've taken God out of the schools at all. It's just the way society has become. Our world has become corrupted. The more a crime is done, the more it becomes "ok" to do... but it's not ok. It's just not as unexpected. Hearing about school shootings just drains me. I feel the blood go from my face, but that's what's happening and we have to prepare for it. I feel that if we tried to put God into schools, there would be more disputes because many people have many different religious views and different people have different levels of tolerance of others' opinions. Somebody could get angry enough about religion just as easily as they get angry about anything else that causes people to go off and go ona shooting rampage. It's all about morals. And that starts at home, not at school.

  12. I agree with Cami. Bringing God into schools is not the answer. There are so many people out there with different religious beliefs, it would be impossible to see to every person's views. If some parents wish to have their children enrolled in schools that focus on education as well as religion, there are special private schools for that. I don't see a reason for public schools to be getting into religion.

  13. I think the shooting was terrible, I mean why would you want to shoot 20 little kids and your own mother. That's messed up! I feel bad for all the families that lost their kids. The children were not able to spend Christmas with their families. In fact, they won't be able to spend any holidays with their families. That was a horrible thing that man did to their families.

  14. Honestly, this was probably one of the most horrible occurances when it comes to shootings. It's one thing when it's a college (still not okay by any means), but an elementary school? It just makes it worse for most of society. The death of young children is always a harsh blow. I do not believe that it was the fact that we 'removed God' from public schools as Huckabee claimed. First, Adam Lanza was not stable mentally. To be able to shoot 27 people (mostly children)at all? No person in their right mind would be able to do such a thing. Second, one of the basic foundations of this country (or at least protected in the First Amendment) is freedom of religion. If God was forced upon students attending public school, it would be violating that freedom. If it's a private, religious school, then it does make sense for a higher power to be recognized, but it'd probably be best for everyone to leave it out of the public school curriculum.

  16. Things like this do happen. It's sad, yes. Is this an act of God punishing us for systematicly removing religion from things like schools? Probably not. Huckabee is clearly just looking for an excuse to blame this incident on.

  17. I think Mike Huckabee is correct.
Can't we at least say the Pledge of Alliegence?
Or is that too "offensive" because our Founding Fathers founded this country "...under God, indivisible, for liberty and justice for all"?
They founded public schools to teach kids how to read the Bible-God's book!
And now we totally drained Him out of our school systems.
I don't think He would have let this happen if He (God) didn't have something to tell us.

  18. I agree with Cami, I don't think it's fair for people to blame taking God out of schools for this shooting. Honestly, God isn't really completely out of schools. I hear discussions about religion all the time and they don't end very well. I feel like putting God and religion back in our school systems would cause turmoil. There are so many different cultures around that not all people believe in "God". You can't blame it on that reason for the school shooting. The way society is as a whole I feel had a big impact, like Cami said, Crime has become a regular occurrence and it seems "okay".
