AUSTIN, MINN. -- Making his most expansive comments yet on the need for a new stadium, Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf chastised politicians Tuesday for dodging an issue that "doesn't serve their political purposes" and said they should not "run away" from a project many Minnesotans want to see happen.
Calling himself not only the owner but the "guardian" of the state's most popular sports franchise, Wilf sat on a stool and answered a series of pointed questions, saying he favored a stadium with a retractable roof, did not think "retrofitting" the team's Metrodome home made sense and felt that politicians who ducked the stadium issue were not providing "an acceptable answer to us." Wilf seemed to save his bluntest remarks for the state's elected officials.
"It's unfortunate that many people don't want to get engaged in it because it doesn't serve their political purposes," Wilf told a sold-out Chamber of Commerce luncheon. "This team belongs to the fans and the people of Minnesota."
Wilf's comments were another sign that the team senses an opening to push the stadium debate, as players pile up wins on the football field. His comments came just days after the Vikings began feuding publicly with the Metrodome's owners over an unwelcome attempt to extend the team's lease past 2011.
While Wilf acknowledged that he was advocating for a stadium that would almost certainly need taxpayer money in a "difficult economy," he brushed aside the notion that Minnesotans might see it as another government bailout of a wealthy professional team owner.
"I think he's a great guy," said Ben Rushton, of Austin, moments after posing for a picture with Wilf. Rushton said he attends one Vikings game a year, but "I would vote yes" for a new stadium. It was "inevitable," he said, that taxpayer money would be involved. "It's going to cost [everybody] money, no matter what."
Monica Dahlen, a mother of three, arrived with purple-painted fingernails, each nail featuring a letter that spelled out "V-I-K-E-S, 4-E-V-E-R." Standing in line as a large crowd filed into a hall to await Wilf and the players, Dahlen said that "as far as taxes, I don't think that should be a problem."
Asked whether the Legislature needs to act in 2010, Wilf simply said that "we got to do it now," and said that "seeing the outcry" from fans regarding the Vikings showed that "the team is something that makes everyone's quality of life that much better." Wilf said the team has no plans to leave Minnesota.
In another departure, Wilf said he now wants a retractable roof stadium. The Vikings have said in the past that the team did not need a retractable roof -- a feature that would add an estimated $200 million to the price of a stadium. Not everyone was ready to join the stadium bandwagon Tuesday, including Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Brandon Talley, an Austin resident who listened to Wilf speak at the YMCA.
At the State Capitol, Pawlenty said the Vikings "need a solution in the not-too-distant future," but noted that the stadium "has to be put in the entire context of lots of other stuff." The governor said the state's next economic forecast, due next week, will show that "we are going to have much more of a challenge this session than people realize."
During much of his visit to Austin, Wilf appeared relaxed and at one point joked openly with Shiancoe about player salaries. Sen. Dan Sparks, DFL-Austin, who sat near Wilf at the luncheon, said Wilf taking center stage would aid the Vikings' cause. "I think it certainly is not going to hurt him," Sparks said.

i think we should build a new stadium because i think lately we've been drawing in a lot larger crowd with our impressive 10 and 1. The bulding of the new stadium would for sure attract more people in and the more people the more money for the franchise. so it would be a benifit in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI agree with hansen, we should build a new stadium. The vikings are having a pretty impressive season this year. I wouldnt even take a chance in losing the vikings. We make millions of dollars every year with that minnesota franchise. They are way more important than the wild or the twins
ReplyDeleteWe need a new stadium. it may take tax payer dollars but its going to be worth it. I wouldnt want the vikings to leave minnesota.

This is a horrible time to decide to give Minnesotan taxpapers yet another tax to worry about in this recession. If the tax is small and absolutely necessary, than I suppose it would be fine. However, that is not the case with this one; it is going to be used to buy a stadium with a retractable roof. This sounds, to me, like a greedy way to take taxpaper money to fund some new roof, rather than using the money for more important purposes. With that being said, I would also like to take into account the agruement being said for the stadium: "The Vikings could leave if we don't get the stadium." I doubt that the Vikings actually would end up leaving, and if they did, then (I know this sounds terrible) good riddance. Remember that this arguement was given by a pretty big Vikings fan.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to make my above argument clear. I believe that the Vikings should leave if they care more about a stadium rather than their fans and the pride that the fans show for the Vikings. If the football players honestly think their comfort in a new stadium is more important than the people who look up to them with pride and respect, then I think those fans can live without them. The team would only be a burden that we could not hold on to during a recession. We should talk about a retractable roof some other time.
ReplyDeleteJust because the Vikings are playing good doesn't mean they need a new stadium that costs a ton of money. I disagree with Justins statement that says "I believe that the Vikings should leave if they care more about a stadium rather than their fans and the pride that the fans show for the Vikings." because they shouldn't be leaving over a stadium. There really isn't anything wrong with the Metrodome. It shouldn't matter what stadium you play in, you should just be happy with what you have.
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with Hannah about how the Vikings shouldn't leave because of a stadium. A new stadium would be nice, but it will cost a ton of money that I don't think we need to be spending right now. I also agree with what Hansen and Logan said because the new stadium might bring in more people to watch the Vikings, especially because of how good their season is going right now. It might end up paying off in the end.
ReplyDeleteHayden read my mind, I think that the Vikings don't really need a new stadium right now. They are obviously playing just fine with it now if their season is 10-1. Maybe in the future when things aren't so tight. And they dont really need one just because the Gophers and the Twins got them. Just sayin. But Logan and Hansen are right, if they did bulid a new stadium it would attract more people, and especially with their good season, people would want to watch them.
ReplyDeleteThe Vikes are doing great this year, they don't need a new stadium to draw fans! I would love to see one get built if the money was coming out of Wilf's pocket, but the times are tough enough on our wallets, we don't need to be buying a new stadium with tax dollars. This really makes no sense to me seeing as both the Twins and Gophers have moved out of the Dome. It was originally built as a football stadium for the Vikings and the other two were just afterthoughts. Now that they have it all to themselves they shouldn't need anything more.

I dont think the vikings need a new stadium right now. They just want a new stadium because all the other sports teams got new stadiums. They have many fans here and if they left just because they got greedy and want a new stadium then many people will be very dissapointed. They dont need one right now. The one they have is just fine. Tax payers dont want another tax set on them right now as money is tight as it is for most people these days. They are playing just fine without a new stadium and maybe sometime in the future when it would be less of a burden we might concider it but for right now i say no they shouldn't biuld a new stadium.
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% with Austin, Tori, and Hayden. New stadium is a waste of money right now, the Vikings are doing awesome, they're already getting a ton of fans because of how good they're playing, and they have the Metrodome all to themselves. What more do they need? They seem kind of greedy and maybe a little bit jealous of not having a new stadium like the Twins, but seriously, the Metrodome is a perfectly fine place for them to be playing right now.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that the Vikings need a new stadium RIGHT now, maybe down the road a little ways. All the tax payers don't need another payment to worry about, money is too tight for most people. The Vikings have the MetroDome all to themselves now. They should just make the best of it unless they want to pay for a new stadium themselves. I agree with Governer Pawlenty, we have other, bigger things to worry about right now, just let us get our economy fixed first.

I pretty much agree with everyone except Justin. The vikings shouldnt even think about leaving just because they might not get a new stadium right now. I'm sure it will happen within the next 10 years so i think wilf needs to stop whining. I think all the vikings fans would love to have a new stadium and I agree that it would bring in way more money but it would be more tax money that a lot of people right now don't have. And lets face it, this is the vikings first good year in how long? so if they expect to get a new stadium with just 1 good year they have to step it up and keep being the team to beat in the league for more years to come. So wilf needs to figure out how to draft for the upcoming years to make a really good team because the old #4 wont be arround for much longer.
ReplyDeletePersonally i seriously dont think they need another staduim. We are gonna leave an empty metrodome when just two years ago we had 3 teams playing there. Also with this economy this is a horrible time to try for a new stadium. I think they should wait until it all clears up and then try for a new one.
