a href="http://news1.capitalbay.com/news/296282-opinion-running-for-president-is-crazy.html">CAPITAL BAY•Dean Obeidallah
(CNN) -- I'm struck by one big question as I watch the Republican presidential candidates battle each other while President Obama tries to win re-election: Why does anyone want to be president?
It's like auditioning to be bandleader on the Titanic. And yes, I said bandleader and not captain because the captain of a ship has more of an impact on the direction of a voyage than President Obama, or any president who might follow him, can have in our hyperpolarized political climate.
With the onslaught of problems he faces today, I wouldn't be shocked if in the coming weeks President Obama appeared on national TV and declared: "I have an important announcement: I was actually born in Kenya. Joe Biden you take over, I'm outta here!"
But he won't quit. Instead, he will raise close to a billion dollars for his re-election campaign. Meanwhile, the Republican presidential candidates will viciously fight each other, like gladiators in the Roman Coliseum -- which, frankly, the past two Republican debates resembled. The audience jeered and booed, with some at times even applauding the death penalty and cheering the notion of allowing a person with no health insurance to die. All that was missing was a thumbs up or down from the crowd indicating if a candidate should be executed. (This, too, would undoubtedly have been met with cheers.)
Think about it: When you run for president, you are running for the worst job in America. If elected (or re-elected) you must deal with a cascade of domestic and international headaches.
But to me the greatest challenge facing our president (or a new president) is not the economy or the European debt crisis. It's not the growing influence of China, the Arab Spring or even the issue of Palestinian statehood.
Nope, the biggest challenge the president faces is us. Yes, "We the People." Simply put, we are horrible. We have become unreasonably demanding. We want everything now and we won't compromise.
"We the People" have become Veruca Salt from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," making demands in our high-pitched voices: "I want a goose that lays golden eggs and I want it now!!" "I want the deficit reduced now, Daddy!" "I want low taxes but the same government services!"
And if you won't give us what we want, when we want it, we will turn our back on you. For example, President Obama had almost a 60% approval rating after the killing of Osama Bin Laden in May, but just four months later a recent poll shows his approval rating at 39%. The left wants him to be more liberal, the right wants him to be more conservative and the middle just wants more.
The Republican presidential candidates have seen this, too, with Rick Perry being welcomed only a few weeks ago into the race like the "prodigal son," but now only a few weeks later, he looks more like a doomed NASA satellite about to fall from the sky.
What has caused us to become so demanding? The 24-hour news cycle and social media allowing instant real-time commentary have contributed. But an even bigger factor is our conditioning to reality show competitions on TV. On any number of TV shows each week, we watch, judge and vote on whether a person performs to our liking. One week we sing their praises, but the next week, if they misstep, they are dead to us.
We now treat our candidates this way. It's a presidential version of "Celebrity Apprentice," where we want to fire -- or at least dissect and scrutinize -- the president and presidential candidates for every small gaffe. I have seen better treatment for contestants on Gordon Ramsay's "Hell's Kitchen" than for our candidates for president.
If this keeps up, what type of candidates for president will we attract in the future? Will it be the smartest and the most qualified or those who, like reality show stars, can weather the cruel glare of an unending spotlight and the fickleness of our affection?
Even reality-show veteran Donald Trump's skin was too thin to run for president, which is shocking since his skin looks like leather. And, yes, that snarky comment is just the kind of thing I'm talking about, but I'm no better than the rest of us.
Since this seems to be what we crave, why not commit 100% to it and create political reality shows to choose our future presidents? What about shows like: "The Amazing Electoral Race," "Dancing with the Candidates," or "So You Think You Can Govern?"
We can vote people off until we are left with the man or woman who has survived by telling us exactly what we want to hear each and every week.
But if we don't take a break from this "American Presidential Idol" mentality, we will have no one to blame but ourselves when the 2016 presidential campaign pits Mike "The Situation" against the Kardashians.
I think that is true that too be pressident is the worts work in the world because when you have to take a decission, there are some people that is going to be agree and desagree with you. I think that we are like willy wonka, and we want everything we haven't and when we have it we don't want it. What I don't understand is why everybody want to be pressident...is like... to want to be the lider of a group of crazy people who doen't like anything and they are all the time in disagree.
ReplyDeleteI fully agree with Alberto, why would you want to get people to like you by promising things and then not doing them so a year into your first term they all hate you.
ReplyDeleteBlakye Nelson
I also agree with what Alberto has to say. I think that If you were to run for president you would have to make sure they had their ideas planed out long before they ran for presidency. Like Obama he believe that he was going to try and change our country for better. All he said was it's time for a change. He has made changes yet the changes were not ones that people nessecarily agreed with. No matter how hard people try to make everyone like them there will always be differences in how people see thing, how people view others. That's why I think no matter what a president will do they will always have someone going against what they think. Personally I'm okay with that because with out peoples opinions our country would not have been formed. That is why I do think the president has to be some what crazy to still want to run for president.

ReplyDeleteI think the statement, Running for President is a great statement. Who would want to run for president? There is no way that the president can make EVERYONE happy, we definitely all are way to demanding. It's horrible, but yes when Obama does something we don't like, we will turn our backs to him, and resent him

I personally think that anybody that runs for President are off there rocker. If you do make it to office you will have little to no privacy and won't even get to see the friends you had made over the years because they could be a security risk. Also being me I can't stand being the center of attention at all because I get extremely nervous in front of a crowd. Sure you would have power to repeal laws you don't like, but they could still be pasted and go into affect anyway, and the ability to declare war on another country but would you really want to be the person to send thousands of people to there death even if they are fighting for there country. So thats my opinion of running for president i agree with the Current event that to run for president you would have to be insane.

I agree with Alberto. Being President can be one of the worst jobs in America, because every decision that you make could be criticized by someone. I do have respect for the people who do run for President because they are making some of the toughest decisions that a person could make. another thing is that no matter what decision you make you will have people agreeing with you and people disagreeing with you.
ReplyDeleteBarrett B. 3
I fully agree with Barrett! They have tough decisions to make and someone has to step up for our country sane or not. Our nation is filled with opinions of the people we elect, but when it comes down to it most choose who they like based on what they say that they like to hear true or not. In my opinion we need to elect for our nation and what it needs rather then trying to satisfy ourselves, or we could all end up with president "Situation" and have gelled hair and abbs. All in all everyone will always have their different oppinions on things and like Chelsey mentioned that is what formed our nation we have today!
ReplyDeleteKatie V.3
I agree with Barrett, being President is one of the hardest jobs in America, who would ever want to make decisions that some people would cheer on and some people would shut down? And I also agree with Joel. Being President, you're putting your life in danger, like some other Presidents have done. If someone doesn't like a decision you make, they could go crazy. Some people in this world don't understand what the President has to go through, he can't please everyone; The only thing he can do is try and make our country better.
ReplyDeleteCheyenne H. 7
I disagree with Alberto. Why dont't you want to be president? Yes, it seems to be a lot of work with a bunch of unhappy people who wants what they can't have. But on the other hand, I have no doubt its the greatest job in the world: To be the most powerfull man in the world. You can do almost whatever you want to, you get a real chance to change to world in a way you believe is the right. So yes, did I get the chance, would I say "yes please" in a heartbeat to becoming president.
ReplyDeleteMikkel M. 1.
The article put into words very nicely on why it is so hard to be a president in today's society. With our struggling economy and the fact that our nation's army is fighting everyday are just a few reasons why would it be very tough to be a President. Also a presidents job includes making decisions and with our society and its people, it is very hard to make decisions.
ReplyDeleteLynn A. 7th period
I know a lot of people disagree with the Obama's government but i don't think they know how hard is it to be the head of one of the most important countries in the world, I'm not saying he can't do better because i know we've had better presidents, I'm just saying that we should think in all of the hard decisions he has to take everyday and also, he is a human and we all make mistakes, I'm sure he is trying to make this a better country, maybe he is not taking all the right decisions but a way to help him make a better job is have an open mind for new laws and changes and also supporting him in his good decisions, and try to make our best to change the things we don't like instead of just complaining.
ReplyDeleteLucy M. 7
Running for president is insane. Point blank. No matter what you do, it's going to be half and half. Half of the people will agree with you and applaud what you do as president, and the other half will criticize you and verbally destroy what you stand for. Unless you're Obama, because then nearly 75% will be against you.And even better yet: a good portion of America will agree with you one day, and the next they'd impeach you if they could. In current day society, there's too many problems to worry about as president of the United States: tax cuts, foreign dependency on oil, health care, foreign aid, and of course, the war on terror. With all the decisions you can't make everyone happy all the time, and to be okay with that and still want the job? You'd have to be just down right crazy.
ReplyDeleteMolly M. 1
I totally agree that running for president is an insane idea. There is absolutely no way that you would be able to please everyone in the United States. However, I don't think that this is a reason to not run for president! I think that this just makes it more of a challenge. If you are a good leader with substantial ideas you will still make it. Also if your true interest is to lead a country and you have shown through other job positions that you are capable of it, then you should follow your dreams. I disagree with Molly when she said you would have to be crazy to run for president. It would be a huge endeavor, but if it is what you want to do in life, go for it! Don't let the opinions of other people manipulate your goals.
ReplyDeleteAnna C 3
I think it would definately be difficult to be the president. You cannot please everyone all of the time, so you would obviously get some critizism. However, if you can deal with all of the negative comments, then you are probably going to be a good president, since you shouldn't listen to other people's negativity.
ReplyDeleteShannel D 3
I totally agree with Anna on this topic. The odds of making president are slim, and if you do manage to get voted in how are you going to keep everyone in this country happy 24/7? Although if you have been thinking about this for a while, you should so go for it and not let anyone tell you any different.
ReplyDeleteEmma B. 2
I think it isn't crazy to run for president as long you can handle that never everyone agrees with you and that the other partis a lot time just wanna do what they want to do, but it's still one of the hardest jobs, and when the american president is doing something wrong it's not only in the american news also a lot other countries put that stuff in the news, the president has to be perfect and that's impossible because everyone likes diffrent stuff. Maybe it would be better to have more then one president.
ReplyDeletesophiaK7
I think that if you run for president you have alot of guts. I mean to go in front of the world making decisions that some people hate while others love takes ALOT of guts. Besides that even sometimes you have to tell the people what's really going on in the world even if they don't like hearing it.
ReplyDeleteKristin M3
I don't think I would ever want to run for president, so I agree with this article. Even though you might have some really good ideas, not everyone will be happy with them. And aside from that, the public and reporters will destroy you. Just look at Sarah Palin and Obama, people found bad stuff about them, even though they both stood for great things. So yes, I do think you'd have to be crazy to run for president with the economy and shape of our country today along with all the baggage that comes with the job.
ReplyDeleteMegan W.
Running for president takes a lot of time, I think. It also let's people make judgments about yourself and who you appear to be. You let them take the side of,"Yes, you'll make a great president." Or "No, you will not be a good leader for this country." My life is already busy enough, who needs that extra stress? Anyways, agreeing with the writer of this article, I personally wouldn't be surprised about the whole Mike "The Situation" running against the Kardashians. That adds good laughs to this article!
ReplyDeleteLiana H 3.
Running for a president, I know that is a difficult, and it takes a lot of time. But come on, who dont want to be a president of United States? Ii will be hypocrisy if someone say that dont want to be. Preident means: maximum power in executive branch. In others words, I can do whatever I want. So If I was presidente I wouldn't say YES WE CAN, but YES I CAN !
ReplyDeleteAlexia M.7
I don"t know why anyone would want to run for president. I think it would be a hard job and very demanding.
ReplyDeleteTrying to make everyone happy is not possible. Some will like your choice of how to do something and others will not. All the campaigning, the speeches, that you have to give and the money that is needed. All the back stabbing and lying trying to make the other person look bad or sound bad. The promises that are made during that time and they are never kept or can not be accomplished.
Your personal life is dragged threw the mud . Any thing that you have done in your past is brought up and any other dirt that the others can find on you. The publicity that a president has is all the time. No matter what you do it is in the news along with any family members. A very hard thing for some to handle. You will never have a personal life again. Even after you are no longer president you are still in the news.
Everyone deserves to have a private life.
