Penn State Child Sex Abuse Scandal

State College, Pennsylvania (CNN) --
The mother of one of Jerry Sandusky's alleged victims -- the first to come forward in the case -- said her son is afraid the former Penn State coach might go free. The son, who is identified as Victim 1 in the indictment, watched an NBC interview with Sandusky this week and cried, the mother told CNN on Wednesday.

"I said, 'Well, why did you cry?' And he said, 'Because I'm afraid that he might go free,' " said the woman, whose face and voice were altered to protect her -- and by extension her son's -- identity.

Sandusky told NBC's Bob Costas on Monday that he has been falsely accused, saying that he only "horsed around" with kids in the shower after workouts. Sandusky denied being sexually attracted to boys, and his lawyer, Joe Amendola, told CNN on Monday night that showering with children does not equate automatically to sexual assault. In the NBC interview, Sandusky denied one of the charges in the grand jury report that assistant coach Mike McQueary had walked in on him raping a boy about 10 years of age.

Sandusky was arrested on November 5, after the release of the grand jury report detailing crimes that he allegedly committed between 1994 and 2009. Sandusky is free on $100,000 bail, against the wishes of prosecutors.

In other developments, representatives of Penn State's campus police and State College police said Wednesday they have no record of having received any report from a Penn State assistant football coach about his having witnessed an alleged rape of a boy by Sandusky.

The alleged locker room rape witnessed by McQueary, who was then a graduate assistant, was detailed in a grand jury report released this month. According to the report, McQueary told Joe Paterno, who was then the team's coach; Paterno then alerted his boss, the school's athletic director.

The scandal revolves around Sandusky, charged by Pennsylvania's attorney general with 40 counts in what authorities allege was the sexual abuse of eight boys, and allegations that Penn State officials failed to inform police when the complaints reached them.

  1. I think its horrible that nobody told the police about Jerry sexually abusing 8 kids. Jerry shouldn't have done that because children usually trust their coaches and teachers. Kids felt horrible because he got away with it than went on to abuse other kids that could have been prevented.

  3. I think the school athletic director should have told the police about the coach. I think the witness should have told the police. I think the coach and the athletic director should have been fined and the coach should have been fired and sent to jail.

  4. This is just sick. 1 I don't understand how someone can walk in there and see this going on and not try to pull the kid away and make sure he's okay. 2 after he just left why didn't he go to the police about it. Of course they would not take it that seriously because it's pen state and they have a good name. 3 how could this man do this to these young boys. I think this man should get serious punishment.

  5. This man is just down right, wrong, sick, vial, disgusting.I think a man that abuses 8 children, especially when they are guys,is just messed up.I think that guy should go to federal prison and rot there.

  6. It is really sick and wrong that someone can do this without anyone noticing. Some people did know about it and didn't tell the police. I think that the athletic director should be held accountable with the coach.

  7. This is just sad, A young boys coach rapes him, someone the little boy trusts, and on top of that someone witnessed it, and just didn't say anything at all. They should both be sent to jail. That is messed up. It's messed up for raping the boy, and its messed up for not even reporting it. I think The one who raped the boy can just stay and rot in jail, because this wasn't even the first time he has done it, and the one who witnessed it, should atleast get a couple years in jail.

  8. I agree with Savannah. What he did was wrong and sick, in my opinion. This man was in a position where he was around children most of the time. In my opinion, if you were caught doing what he did there's no question in my mind that you should be thrown in jail. What made things worse was that Penn State officials didn't alert the police right away. I think that whoever would want to withold that information should also be thrown in jail.

  9. Abuse is uncalled for. Anyone that does it shouldn't get away with it. They were young boys, who are they supposed to trust if something like this happens to them. The person that saw it should have reported it and made sure something was done about it. It might have prevented future abuse and right now there might not be as many people in a bad situation. Not only did he hurt young boys, he hurt their families, everyone around him, and is giving Penn State a bad reputation.

  10. I agree with Elle. Abuse is a terrible thing. I just can't understand why some people do that. Espiecially to little kids, they're shocked for their life time. I think they should pay for what they did and I think it's wrong that Sandusky is out for a bail. He should stay in jail for a long time. Because Abuser don't change. It's just awful, that the incident wasn't reported to the police. That would have been at least one right thing. Even if it wasn't Paternos fault that the child got abused, it was his fault that it wasn't reported to the police and with that I think it's nearly as bad because the Abuser can continue. I think Paterno shouldn't continue coaching.

  11. I think this man SHOULD NOT be allowed out of jail, I mean abusing & rapping 8 kids?! That's no where near ok! Think about how some of them have been scared for life, I agree with Barret that this man should have been put in jail immediately. He could have then fought for freedom if he wasnt doing what was seen. Hearing that a coach was seen rapping & abusing young children or even teens is not what you want to hear coming from a good college like this one use to be.

  12. I think Sandusky should be in jail more long time. Because I always thought that the period that stay in the jail who did the raped the people, is too short for they examine themselves. I heard that most of the prisoner did same thing after they released in the jail. Espacially rapist. That means the period in the jail is too short compare what they did. So I think SAndusky should be in jail longer time. And Perterno doesn't have to be in jail, but I think he should quit the coach. Because he also has some responsibility. He knows that but he didn't call to police. I'm pretty sure he also has some fault.

  13. I think that it was not even close to be ok for this man to be raping these children. The worst part about it was when the assistant coach reported watching Sandusky raping a child but then the athletic director didnt report it to the police. I think that if they he didnt report it to the police then I think that he should be in Jail for a Long Time. Just because he didnt report it, it doesnt mean that he shouldnt be in trouble. At the same time I wonder why any of the other victims didnt say anything about what Sandusky was doing to them not just the one that actually reported it.

  14. I think it is SO disgusting that people who seem trustworthy and respectable commit crimes such as these. On top of it I think it is so wrong that this was not reported to the police immediately! Penn state was trying to keep its reputable status, however by hiding this incident for so long it made their mistake even more notorious! I think that all of the people involved or that witnessed this horrific event with out taking action to report it should have extreme consequences and have punishments that teach them a lesson. Things like this should never happen and it is so sad that now these young children will have to live with those memories for their entire lives.

  15. I agree with Savannah & Chelsey! This going on with out someone saying something. It's just sick that someone would be able to do that multiple times! It's just terrible.

  16. I agree with chelsey. I just don't get how someone could just walk in on that and not say something. It's just wrong on both the person that did it and the person who didn't say anything.

  17. i dont think that the head coach should have been fired if he brought it to the sports director. if they got told by the coach that they were doing bad stuff in the showers on campus then they should have to turn that person in to the cops the head coach shouldnt have to. i think he should still have his coaching job and they made a big mistake on firing him.

  18. Raping 1 kid is enough but several... the man is a freak. Many people blame the coach because he didnt do all that he could and i think he deserves to lose his job he was worried about his reputation more then children. I wonder how he would react if those were his kids being rapped. Joe Peturno was recently diegnosed with lung cancer, carma.

  19. This is so sad and terrible. I don't understand why things like this even happen. I think Sandusky and the people who failed to report the crime deserve a lot of time and maybe life, as was said in previous comments. It's unfortunate that this happens and in this case young children are involved. I'm pretty sure the childhoods of the young victims were taken from them, and justice should be served.

  20. I think this is just horrible. Especially if you know that the victim is getting abused and you saw it, and you didn't do anything you should be ashamed. That child is probably scarred for life. Like Katie said they should be charged for a life time. What they did was cruel.

  21. What i don't get is why more then one sex abuse scandal popped up at the same time. like with the thing that happened with syracuse and i think there was also some small college somewhere to. i think that something fishy is going on.

  22. I dont believe someone would do this. Just because he didnt turn it in to cops doesnt mean he is at fault. He told someone about it so why does he get the entire fall for it? i still disagree with the sex scandal, this is wrong and should be handled in some way.

  23. I honestly think that if something ever happened to anyone and a teacher finds out they should report it. I honestly don't think its right that he would do such a thing. People shouldn't be sex scandaled they should just be left alone.
