Romney criticized for bullying while in high school

Washington (CNN)
Phillip Maxwell wishes he had done something to stop it.

Maxwell, a Michigan attorney, is still haunted by what he claims he witnessed on the campus of the state's elite Cranbrook School in 1965: a young Mitt Romney and a group of friends holding down a classmate named John Lauber and cutting off chunks of his long hair. "It was not an event you take a lot of pride in. And it was that way for all of us," Maxwell told CNN.

Maxwell confirmed the story, first reported in the Washington Post. However, he insisted the incident was far worse than a high school prank. "I'm a lawyer. I know what an assault is. This kid was scared. He was terrified. That's an assault," Maxwell said.

Romney said in an interview with Fox News Radio he does not recall the incident described in the Post article. But the former Massachusetts governor acknowledged he engaged in pranks that "might have gone too far" and apologized for any harm done during his time at Cranbrook. "Back in high school, I did some dumb things, and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that," Romney said.

Maxwell told CNN he is disappointed in Romney's response to the story."He says he doesn't remember it and I find it difficult to believe," Maxwell said in a telephone interview. "It's unfortunate that Mitt simply hasn't owned up to his behavior," he added.

Maxwell, who told ABC News he is a registered independent who has voted for both Democrats and Republicans, said the episode is "relevant" in the campaign as a window into Romney's character."I guess you have to take it into account. Are you the kind of person who would stop the abuse of an innocent person?" Maxwell asked.

In an interview on a separate topic for the June issue of Automobile Magazine, however, Maxwell said he will not be casting his ballot for Romney, though added praise for the candidate. "I'm a Democrat, so I won't vote for him," says Maxwell. "But he'd probably make a pretty good president. He's very smart, very principled.

To this day, Maxwell regrets he will never have the chance to make amends with Lauber who, according to the Post, died in 2004. "I wish I could have apologized to him," Maxwell said.

Late Thursday, the Romney campaign provided statements from other former classmates of the GOP contender. "Mitt was a thoughtful guy with a great sense of humor who cared about his classmates. He had a good perspective on how to balance all the pressures high school students face. He would never go out and do anything mean spirited. Clownish, yes. Never mean," Richard Moon, one ex-classmate said in the statement furnished by the campaign.

"Mitt never had a malicious bone in his body – trying to imply or characterize him as a bully is absurd," John French, another former classmate, said in another statement released by Romney's staff.

  1. I think that if some one get's a upper class job like Romney, no one should criticize what he did in his younger years. Ya maybe he didnt do the smartest of thing's but we all make mistakes. It's not like he is the only one to bully or be bullyied. He could have changed from his younger years and probably did now that he is in the high seated job he is in. So I think it is wrong for people to do this and to bring back your younger years it's not right.

  2. I don´t quite agree with Kyle. Because of experience, I think that bad people never changes. I absolutely hate when somebody is bullying other people and even more if they are in a group. I think those people are cowards for doing that and they are bad people. Like Kyle said, we all make mistakes, but for me bullying is not something that you can mistake in, I think it is something really serious that you should care about... Back in Spain, a guy in my school commited suicided about 6 years ago because of bullying (He was in 10th grade at that time). In my school we all have being concern about how bad bullying is since then. I am just saying that if Romney wants to be president, he can go for it, but I would never vote for him.

  3. Romney should not be criticized for something that happened so long ago. There is no real proof of what he did; although people may claim to be bullied by him, others say that he was a kind and good-hearted highschooler. This issue happened in the past and should stay there. If Romney is a man suitable for being president, this one incident of supposed "bullying" should not put an end to his carrer pursuits.

  4. I agree with Anna- this happened in Romney's past and it should be left there. Lots of people do things in high school that they aren't proud of, but that doesn't mean they don't turn out to be good people. People make mistakes, and no one is perfect. It's not like previous American presidents haven't done similar things. I'm sure we have had many presidents before who were not great people in highschool, but that didn't mean they were a bad choice for president. Maybe he was a bully in highschool, and maybe he wasn't. Maybe this incident was the one and only time he bullied another individual. We can't be certain, and I believe that we can't base our vote on something like this. I think we should vote for the person who we believe will run our country the best.

  5. i think that he shouldnt be judged on what he did 40 years ago, because in 40 years people can change alot. so i think that he shouldnt be judged on what he did that long ago

  6. i agree with kyle and Anna, something that happened 40 years ago should not put and to someones life goal or carrer. there is no real way for anyone to prove he did anything. accusations against people in positions he is in are made everyday. people say them either because they dont want him as are president or they want to ruin his life by getting massive amounts of research on his past which could bring up even more lies.

  7. I agree with the majority, yes it's in his past, and yes it should certainly stay there, everyone makes mistakes, NOBODY is perfect, but Romney has to know that once he has the job he has now, their are no secrets, people will find everything out, and nobody knows except Romney himself if things are true or not. I guarantee you that Romney didn't know when he was in High School, that one day he would be in such an upper class job, and have to deal with this now. But, nobody knows for sure if he is a bully still or, if not. He seems like a great guy, but after hearing about this. I don't know if I would want him as president, but I guess I would want the man best suited for the job, and it still might be Romney.

  8. i believe this guy shouldn't get pinned for something he did 40 years ago. It's the past and people make mistakes. You don't judge people for what they did in the past. So I think that he shouldn't get anything pinned against him.

  9. I think that it isn't fair that Romney isbeing punished now for something he did so many years ago. Everybody make mistake. I think that the media shouldn't of made such a big deal about this, I'm sure that everybody that has ever ran for a govt position has at one point in time done something that came back to haunt them. So I say that people shouldn't hold it against Romney just because at one point in time he bullied somebody.

  10. I'm sure we can all agree that what he did was wrong. However this doesn't mean that what he did so long ago should affect how he's being viewed now. Everyone makes mistake & if you respect someone in their present state you should look at that person's past events as things that have made who they are today.

  11. I agree with Isaac, this should not affect how people view him now. It seems like people are just digging for dirt now which isn't fair to the candidates. Like Isaac said, past mistakes don't define who they are as a person. That's all behind them. What you see know is who they really are.

  12. I think that the public should stop criticizing Mit Romney for something he did as a high school student. Mistakes are something to be learned from and shouldn't be used as leverage in a political campaign. Bullying is a problem across the United States, and unfortunately, Mr. Romney was made an example, because he is in the public eye.

  13. I think people should stop criticizing Rommey for what he did in high school, its been so many years and everyone makes mistakes, if we start to look for stuff like that every single person in the government would have something because nobody is perfect, everyone makes mistakes the important thing here is learn from them and not do them again. I think we should leave the past in the past because its never going to come back, instead, we should move on and try to be a better person everyday learning from our mistakes.

  14. I think it's been pointed out already alot that what he did was wrong but that it was also in his past. However,it makes me wonder what goes on inside his head, day and night, knowing that he'd have to live with that guilt until he dies.It also makes me wonder if,when he bullied the kid, anybody stepped in or stood up for the poor guy getting beaten up,or if anyone ran for help.I find shame in anyone that uses any technique to hurt others, just to make themselves feel better. But,like everyone else,I believe it's in his past, and all he can do now is face it.

  15. I think that Romney wouldn't make a great person to lead the people if he didn't treat others with respect back then. Bullying is a serious thing to talk about and something should be done about it. If Romney wants to make up for his mistakes, he should use his power do something about bullying.

  16. I honestly think that Romney wouldn't be a great leader because of the way he treated other people with disrespect. I also think its not right that he bullied people back then its not the way to go with anything. If he wants to be in charge he should do something about everything that goes wrong.

  17. I think that romney should not be criticized for what he did in school.

I do realize that he should not have tried to deny that he did not remember.

  18. I agree that Romney shouldn't be judged by this incident that happened so long ago. Nobody can prove that this story is true, this guy could just be trying to bring him down. He has other classmates that say he would never have done such a thing so who knows which to believe? And even if it truly did happen, it shouldn't have anything to do with peoples' opinions of him now. Nobody can judge him for it because everybody does stupid things in their lives. Everyone has those moments that you wish you could take back, but can't. Mitt Romney is just like anybody else and should not be punished for it.

  19. I hate stuff like this. People try and ruin another persons image By telling the whole world about something bad that happened in high school. Everyone makes mistakes, its part Of being human. Obviously if your cutting off some kids hair that's a little over board. But still If someone's running for office or something like that what are you going to gain from ruining them? Nothing.

  20. I agree with most of the people commenting. He shouldn't be judged on something from his past, it should be left there. I wonder how they would like it if Romney brought up something from their past, I don't think they would like it very much.

  21. I don't agree. No, people should not make false accusations just so he doesn't win, but what if it's true? If he was a bully in high school, do you really want that kind of person running your country? I believe people do make mistakes, everyone does. But this is multiple people claiming to be bullied by him. Not one person just one time. If that was the case, it would be a mistake. But bullying multiple people more than once goes past making a mistake. That's just being a cold-hearted person. Yes I think they should definately check into it more but if it's true, I think it should be brought up now. It's true the past is the past, but to what extent? He didn't just wake up one day and think "I wanna run for president". His family has been in politics his whole life, so when he was younger he should of thought about how bullying would affect him later in life.

  22. I think almost everybody has bullied someone at one point. I don't think he should be criticized for something that happened so long ago. I'm sure that anybody in his shoes would deny it as well.

  23. But not everyone who bullies runs for president. When we get older and if one of your bullies runs for president, are you going to vote for him? I know I wouldn't. I agree with what Alberto said. People usually don't change for the better. If you know how it feels to be bullied, would you want someone responsible for that to lead you? I doubt many would. If it affects him it's his fault.

  24. We're going to bring up something he did over fifty years ago? Really? This makes no sense. And then Maxwell goes on to say that Romney is an okay guy, and don't let this sway your vote? Then what on earth did he bring up the incident for? This sounds a lot like Marc Antony's Oration from Julius Caesar when he says that he does not want the Romans to turn to mutiny, but that's what he wanted all along and cleverly put the idea into their heads.

  25. I also think that people change. I think most people sometime in their lives have done stuff that they weren't proud of and were mean to some one when they probably shouldn't have been. That happened so long ago and he apologized so i think he realized what he did was wrong.

  26. I don't think something that happened a long time ago should matter to much. People make mistakes and that was one of his. So to just pull that out of nowhere for a presidential candidate that shouldn't hurt him to much is his campaign.
