(CNN) -- Therapy aimed at turning gay kids straight will soon be illegal in California, with the state's governor declaring he hopes a new law will relegate such efforts "to the dustbin of quackery." The legislation -- which the state Senate passed in May, Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law this weekend and will take effect January 1 -- prohibits attempts to change the sexual orientation of patients under age 18.
"This bill bans non-scientific 'therapies' that have driven young people to depression and suicide," Brown tweeted. "These practices have no basis in science or medicine."
But practitioners of so-called "reparative therapy" say the assertions of the governor and gay rights advocates "just are not true," according to David Pickup, a spokesman for the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality.
Joined by "individual therapists and individual minor clients," his group will file a "major lawsuit" this week to challenge the law," Pickup said. The Pacific Justice Institute separately told CNN it will file its own lawsuit Monday, alleging the law violates the First Amendment.
"We do competent therapy, therapy that truly works," Pickup, who himself underwent such therapy and now administers it to others, said Monday on CNN. "For them to have a bill that says, 'No, we can't even talk about these issues, we can't do anything to help these children resolve their homosexual feelings and maximize their heterosexual potential' -- that's the height of political and therapeutic irresponsibility."
Pickup alluded to a report by the American Psychiatric Association that, he says, doesn't find any "proof that (the therapy) causes harm." But the psychiatric organization -- which is the world's largest of its kind, with more than 36,000 members -- determined, in fact, that reparative therapy poses a great risk, including increasing the likelihood or severity of depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior for those undergoing therapy. Therapists' alignment with societal prejudices against homosexuality may reinforce self-hatred already felt by patients, the association says.
"The longstanding consensus of the behavioral and social sciences and the health and mental health professions is that homosexuality per se is a normal and positive variation of human sexual orientation," the association says.
I feel that getting married to the same sex is wrong. But if your in love with some one of the same gender and you don't need a piece of paper telling the world that that person is yours. Then the citizens of the U.S. should feel free to be with whom ever they love. Who you are is who you are and that is what makes you special and you shouldn't feel like anyone less than yourself.

DeletePeople have no common sense now days."National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality." Really now people? This is so stupid!!! Why are we getting into other people business? If you love someone. Would you want someone else saying it was wrong or right? Or having you go into therapy cause your gay? To make people all the same. to make man and women like each other. THAT'S WRONG. Making someone into something they are not is not the answer. The answer is, let them be themselves. If they're happy together, let them. Are they hurting you?

this subject is stupid.I thin that most people should do what they want but the people shouldn't do rated r.stuff.it isn't very good.they just shouldn't do it.they should just put the therapy with the same gender.

It's wrong for males to be with males and girls to be with girls but if your happy..... come on people let them be happy. Its weird to think about it but suck it up and deal with it. It's everywhere you look people are gay or lesbian. I'm friends with homosexual people there good friends but if they start looking at me like they like me that's when you draw the line don't hate them without knowing there story......

I agree with Ryan. It's honestly not fair to make everyone be who they don't want to be. If you were to get married to some poor person that you love and you were wealthy, and you were the happiest man on Earth would you let some stupid governor tell you what's right? I didn't think so.

What can I say, There's nothing wrong with banning the gay therapy thing.
ReplyDeleteIf I remember correctly some Prussian guy was a homosexual and helped George Washington make a united army. Besides some people get scared at those thing and commit suicide or later on they get married to someone of the opposite sex, but then later they will them and fall in love with someone of the same sex. "A poet once said love can make you do crazy things;" "I don't know who said that... actually I don't know were I heard that?" I wonder if I came up with it?
It probably doesn't matter.

Well... I guess if we're going to talk about this, first I should state that I do not oppose homosexuality. I think that if people still love one another and they're not hurting you by being together, then we don't really need to make such a big fuss about it. Now I'm going to say that because of that, maybe therapy isn't such a good idea. I don't believe we can afford to spend money on a program that isn't working. I believe that the people who take these therapies are only running from something that they can't control. Homosexuality is not a choice... I repeat... it is not a choice. Why fight it and why waste money trying to stop it?
ReplyDeleteI feel that the kids that are gay is very good that they are going to have reparative therapy. I think that they should have that therapy so that they don't become gay again. Maybe if the kids do talk to a therapist, the therapist can help them out and the kids will not be stressed out anymore. The kid will probably won't do any bad things anymore. Hopefully!

Wow. That's surprising progressive. An excellent move in my opinion. Gay conversion therapy is a disease masquerading as a cure. It is such a stupid idea to try to change how people are just so they can fit society's definition of normal. It seems like it would be very damaging to the people involved as well.

I believe that we should not be trying to change someone if they like people of the same gender. They haven't done anything wrong and don't deserve to be put in therapy for something they have no control over. I think the reason why they would be depressed or thinking about/comitting suicide is because they were singled out and told that there is something wrong with them. I think the government shouldn't have any say in what they think is "helping" the gay kids in the U.S. Just let them be, they aren't hurting anyone or violating anything.

Life is your therapy.
ReplyDeleteBanning gay and lesbian marriage is somewhat of a progress.
If they want to fight for this, let them fight. Because it would all be in vain.
They will soon learn that it is wrong.
Because they are more likely to get diseases of the unmentionable area.
Let God teach them what is right and wrong. And a law to push it in that direction isn't going to hurt.

"Reparative therapy"? Really? If anything it seems it would do more harm than good. If anything involvoing homosexuality is wrong, this is one of them in my opinion. One of the things most teens and children want is acceptance. I'm highly doubtful that people under 18 feel accepted when they are treated like their feelings are a disease. I thought that being true to yourself was a good thing. How can people say that being yourself is good when adults are pushing you to change? It just seeems wrong to actually try to change a person's sexual orientation.
