(CNN) – As negotiations continue over how to thwart the looming crisis known as the fiscal cliff, President Barack Obama will take his case on the road this week, urging Americans to support his push to let tax rates rise on the wealthiest Americans.
The president will tour a manufacturing facility and give remarks in the southeastern Pennsylvania town of Hatfield on Friday, the White House announced Tuesday. The campaign-style trip comes as another example of the president building pressure on Congress through public support, rather than the behind-closed-doors approach used in last summer's debt talks.
Friday's trip will follow a week of meetings with other constituencies. He'll meet with small-business owners from across the country on Tuesday and host an event at the White House on Wednesday with "middle-class Americans who would be impacted" if Congress fails to reach a deficit-reduction agreement by the year's end. Also Wednesday, Obama is scheduled to meet with business leaders. He took part in similar meetings with labor groups and business heads two weeks ago, shortly before he held a meeting with congressional leaders in the White House.
The clock is ticking as Congress and the White House work to hash out a plan that would prevent an enormous amount or "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts from taking place next year. Both sides are stalemated over how to raise revenue as part of a deficit-reduction package. House Republicans call for changes in the tax code - namely the closing of loopholes and limiting of deductions - while Senate Democrats and Obama argue for the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts for households making more than $250,000.
While talks are ramping back up after the holiday break, a second meeting between the White House and congressional leaders has yet to be scheduled, though the president did reach out on Saturday to House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid about their efforts to avert the draconian cuts and tax hikes.

I think that the government should have a conference about the money problem. The people will have to agree on the budget. It would get bad if the government does not come up with a plan.

This is a huge problem with our economy right now, im sure the president will have a hard time raising taxes. This is the first time I have heard of the "fiscal cliff" but it sounds pretty serious! I hope we can make some compromises like Mr. Fermoyle said, raising taxes and cutting spending maybe?

I agree with Alex the economy is dealing a crisis pretty much with taxes. Raising them doesn't make anything better. Obama should lower taxes for poor and raising for wealthy people.

I don't necessarily think they will negotiate, it will most likely be Obama "fixing" the situation (We haven't even had a budget passed for the last three years! ), and the poor people who disagree with him will be forced to agree. However, if his plan (if there is one) does fail, I think that the people who disagreed (but forced to agree) with him will be blamed (not Obama), and the country will go into a recession. If this recession happens, our generation will be paying 15 trillion dollars (through rising taxes) for the rest of our natural lives. Lets just hope this ends well.

Not that any of us have a clear understanding of what this is exactly about, considering most of us have only heard of it for the first time now. Although, I think that we all realize that this will effect us if the problems aren't resolved. It may be hard for the two different parties to agree, but they should work something out or our economy is going to be way worse than it already is.
ReplyDeleteI agree with with everyone here.I still think Obama and the congress should make up their mind.If they don't we will end up having another great depression. They should fix the situation and quit arguing about the economy. This is stupid they should just make up their mind and leave it as that because the more they argue the more they are never going to get any where and then it will create problems for everyone.

I really hope Obama tries to fix things this time because times are tough, and we need a great leader to pull us out. The time is ticking and Obama has until February or March to fix this.
ReplyDeleteWill he let the people down or fix this?
