(CNN) -- Nelson, a small Georgia city north of Atlanta, is requiring the head of virtually every household to own a firearm, the city's clerk told CNN Tuesday. The community's five-member council voted unanimously to approve the measure Monday night.
The proposal was modeled on a similar law in nearby Kennesaw, a measure that has been on the books since 1982. Nelson, which numbers around 1,300 people, is the second city in the state to mandate gun ownership.
"In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore," the ordinance said. People with physical or mental disabilities are exempt from the law, as are "paupers," felons, and those who oppose gun ownership based on belief or religious doctrine.
Councilman Duane Cronic recently said that the law would give every family the right to protect themselves and their property "without worrying about prosecution for protecting themselves."
I think that the people in the immediate area of the school should own gun's. So that way they could have armed people right there in the neighborhood to cut the response time down.

Its kind of funny how stupid some of the laws in America are. Im not saying that this is a stupid law or anything, but there are quite a few. Sometimes I just laugh when I hear about some of the laws here. Like the time when I got pulled over for window tint the first time and insted of a "fix-it ticket" I got ordered to go to juvenile court in Roseau. I mean yeah I broke the law but that just seems a little too harsh.

I think that it is bad that people are told that they have to have a gun. We don't know if they will use it the right way. They might shoot someone that is innocent.

I am on both sides with this one. The reason that I'm against is because now we have to watch someones moves just so that they don't take the gun out or even pull the trigger. The good reason is that we will be more protected by other people. Like if you were talking to someone and you both had a gun. Then there is another person across the street with a gun. Your back was towards the gunman but the other person that you were talking to killed him. BAM! I would like to see the future where we are allowed to have a gun with us at all times.

I guess I can sort of see how the lawmakers of this law thought this could be beneficial to their citezens safety, but then again I don't completely agree with it. I'm sure not every person in that town is going to want to own a gun. I think this law is infringing on those people's personal freedoms and choices- they should get to decide whether they want to possess a gun or not.

Okay,I can understand partially with some of your views and some of them are based on misconceptions that you learned somehow. First, shootings DO NOT just happen at schools. School shootings are probably the smsallest minority of all gun-related crimes. Second, if a criminal wants to get a gun they will get it. They don't have to go through legal channals to get one. All they would have to do would be either A.) They steal someone else's or B.)They get one from their gang or what-not or buy it on the black market. Sorry, but there aren't just a few crazy people shooting innocent children.
ReplyDeleteThird, you think by just having a gun people will just start shooting people because they have this power? This is what the law will try to prevent. If someone tries to go on a shooting spree, good people who will protect their home and others will be able to put a stopto that. I personally think that this law is a good thing, it is't infringing on our rights,in fact its enforcing them. If you don't agree with having a gun in your household you don't have to have one. Its your neck. If you are exempt to the law because you have a disability it may mean that you can't have a gun if you are not able to use it. It does't say this but I'm guessing that with this law a felon wouldn't be able to get a gun legally. Also this way someone will be able to protect themselves using a gun without being declared conspiracy theory, unstable, fanatics. This law will protect American families by allowing them to keep a gun without being pressured that they shouldn't have one and (as I said before) allow them to protect themselves.
This shouldn't seem so intimidating, America was built upon the foundations of the Bible (I'm sorry if you don't agree, but look at the carvings of Moses and the Ten Commandments in the Supreme Court building), indepedence, freedom and the wish of our people to be able to protect their families and friends without having anyone or the govt. do it for them or keep them from doing it.

I think that it's good they passed this law. It's a right that most every american has. The 2nd amendment was written when washington was president, and that amendment is the right to bear arms.

I can understand why they want to protect us and that we wouldn't get into trouble for protecting ourselves; but what if the other person was also protecting themselves. It would just be a mess because both of them would say they were protecting themselves. Then you wouldn't know who was lying and well that wouldn't be fun in court. Then again nothing is fun in court.

I can understand why some people would see this new law as a good one, because in cases were you needed to defend yourself and or your family is one example. But I don't agree with the new law, because I don't think they should be able to order you to own a gun and amo for it. I do however think it was a good idea that sence the law did pass, that they also included that if it goes against your religion then you are excluded from that law. I think if they had not included that part that it woudln't have passed or been very popular. In the end I beleive that the people should have the final say in wheather they would like to own a fire arms or not.

I can understand why people are arguing with the law about guns. Yeah, we wont know if there gunna go shoot someone but we shouldn't be taking guns away from everyone .

I believe they should pass this law. Everyone should have to be ready just in case if anything dangerous happens. But then again I'm still thinking some people will use their weapons for something horrible.
ReplyDeleteDavid Hoang per3
I do agree with you on the first part but not the second. If there's a person that is going to use a gun for something else then protecting they're kids and community, then they will probably get thrown in jail if someone finds out, or they will get killed when they harm someone's kid

I think it is wrong to ban the guns from certain states. This is very stupid. How will people defend themselves.
ReplyDeletechelsey jensen.7
I do not think that this makes much sense, although I do agree with them making the exception for those who need it. I do not think that a person should be forced to have their house armed. Think of the families who are on a tight budget, they would be wasting a lot of money just to protect themselves from something that has a small chance of happening.
ReplyDeleteJared Streiff p2
I just don't see how this makes sense. It should be someone's choice if they want to own a gun or not. That's one of the great things about America- we have free choice. If we are forced to buy things that we may not want, like healthcare or guns, it just doesn't seem right that the government can MAKE us buy it. If someone has cancer and they choose not to go through treatment and just live the rest of their life peacefully, it's their choice. They may need healthcare or a gun, but if they don't want it, it shouldn't be forced upon them. We all need to keep our rights to do what we want, even if what we want is completely silly and irrational. I just don't think someone should be able to say "You have to have this." I may think that everyone in the world NEEDS to have bright pink hair, but that's my opinion. Having people make our decisions for us is no better than living in a dictatorship.

It should be the choice of the person if they want to own a gun or not. There shouldn't be a law saying we have to own one. Some people aren't comfortable operating a gun or having them in there household. Now that the law has passed I believe they did well on saying its not required if its against your religion and obviously if your a felon but I just don't agree that its a good law regardless.

This doesnt really make much sense. Your going put a gun in someone heads that may not know how to use. May be sick and may go killing people.
