Two teenagers, both seriously injured a week apart while playing hockey, remained hospitalized on Sunday at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where their family members anxiously watched their every movement, hoping for signs of improvement.
Jenna Privette, an 18-year-old senior at St. Croix Lutheran High School in West St. Paul who was injured on Friday, was in satisfactory condition, still unable to move her legs or feet and still experiencing pain and tingling in her arms, according to her father, Dan Privette of Burnsville. "There hasn't been a lot of change," he said on Sunday, although an MRI showed no breaks in her spinal cord. She will undergo further testing.
Jack Jablonski, a 16-year-old Benilde-St. Margaret's sophomore paralyzed on Dec. 30 after a check from behind that severed his spinal cord, had his feeding tube removed on Saturday, ate his first solid food -- cheese pizza -- and was lifted into an upright position for a few minutes. "He's been lying on his back for seven days, and he did very well," said his father, Mike Jablonski.
Jablonski, who has been told he will never walk or skate again, has regained some movement in both his shoulders and upper arms. "Moving his arms -- that's huge," said his father, who planned to spend Sunday decorating his son's hospital room with NHL jerseys sent to him in an outpouring of sympathy and support from the hockey world.
The family has been heartened by the small improvements in Jack's mobility, as well as by seeing his spirit returning. "All of a sudden we got Jack back. He's talking. His personality is there," Mike said. "With all the meds, he was so groggy. I told him, 'You've got a lot of people pulling hard for you.' The hockey community, and the community in general, has been beautiful."
But while his slight gains in mobility are positive, "it doesn't change the fact that the spinal cord is completely severed," said Dr. Tina Slusher, pediatric critical care doctor at HCMC. "With various devices, he will have some use, and even a little movement means you can do a lot more. Still, we're not very optimistic about a lot more return in function." If Jack's progress continues, he probably will be moved to a rehabilitation facility within the next week or two, Slusher said.
Privette's prognosis is unclear, although her injury appears less severe than Jablon-ski's. "She's had an MRI, and it did not show breaks in the spinal cord, which makes it different than Jablonski's [injury]," said Carl Lemke, athletic director at St. Croix Lutheran. "It's an injury she's had in the past. Hopefully, it will improve."
The two high-profile incidents have sparked debate about how the game should be played, coached and officiated to best protect the safety of young players.
Checking is not allowed in girls' hockey, under Minnesota High School League rules, yet Dan Privette said that he saw his daughter checked from behind and that the player who delivered the check did not receive a penalty.
Checking is allowed in boys' hockey, although not from behind, at the bantam and high school levels.
Mike Jablonski doesn't think checking should be banned, but he hopes that one result of his son's injury is stricter officiating. "Checking 10 to 20 years ago is different than it is now," he said. "You can't be hitting people blindly into the boards. Let's make this a finesse game of speed and skill."
Even before the recent injuries, Todd Cocallas, board member for the Eden Prairie Hockey Association, was calling for stricter officiating. His son, a bantam, suffered a concussion this season when he was crossed-checked from behind and sent face-first into the boards. "The kid didn't even get a penalty," Cocallas said. "He should have been kicked out of the tournament. Kids have got to be taught that this is not OK."

This is truly horrible. I cant believe that two teens for the Twin Cities, have been injured. The sad thing is that Jenna was a girl hockey player and in girls hockey you aren't aloud to check. I just find it amazing how just the other week she was coming up with a big fund razor for Jack, and now she gets injured. My thoughts and prayers go out to both players.

It is very sad that all this is happening to Jack and Jenna. I hope people realize that checking from behind is horrible! Now that all this is happening maybe other players will think twice before they check anyone from behind!!

It is all part of the spot. It is a terrible thing but sometimes people get hurt. If people could just follow the rules a lot less people would get hurt. Meagan larson 7
DeleteAs sad as this is,I think its also enlightening to know that they are both recovering.I'm not exactly familiar with the rules of hockey except for tripping and well, checking from behind.I support both of them and wish both of them the best and that they both come out of it with a full recovery.

I think the kids should be kicked out of hockey for doing an illegal move and paralyzing someone. it is not as important to win as it to play safely. I think that they should give penalties for checking.

I think that it is really sad for both of these students to play a game and then to get paralyzed by some person. There is a time to be serious in a game but there is also a time that you can take the game too seriously. The referee should of give the people that paralyzed those students a penalty for what they did.

I thinks its a terrible thing for two hockey players from Minnesota to get injured in a very short amout of time. For a girl to check someone from behind ,when your not even allowed to check in girls hockey, is going way to far for a high school hockey game. I also think if you check from behind you should get suspended from a game or something, but some players don't even get a pentalty. It's true hockey players need to learn it's not okay to check from behind. I hope hockey plays people learn from this. Both of the players are in my thoughts and prayers.

What happened to jack and jenna was awful. I think that the players that paralized them should've gotten a game miss conduct for what they did. It is scary to think that me or any of my friends that play hockey could be hurt so bad so quickly.

I agree that what happened to Jack and Jenna is awful, but I also think that what the players who did that to them are going through, must be awful to. One of the boys who hit Jack went to the hospital and appologized to him, and is also concitering quitting hockey because of what happened to Jack. Just by a sudden decision to do the wrong thing, it is crazy to think that it could bad so quickly. I think the players who hit Jack and Jenna have gotten enough punishment by knowing what they have done, and I don't think they will do it again. If they do, however, they should most definately get a game misconduct or more.
ReplyDeleteIt is very sad to have 2 players injured so seriously in a short time period. The rules need to be enforced more and punishments made. As someone mentioned that the ones who caused the accident surely must feel terrible for hurting the other players. It is just a game and should be fun but a lot of people take it to seriously. And yes it is a rough game and precautions such as rules are there to protect all the players . Maybe now they will do more enforcing of the rules. Its just sad that it take someone getting hurt to make the rules be enforced.

This is crazy. Two hockey players from Minnesota getting injured the same way within a week period. It's even more crazy because in girls hockey you aren't even supposed to check. I also feel for the people who checked Jack & Jenna. Imagine what they go through every night knowing they paralized someone. Knowing they made it so someone could never walk again..
ReplyDeleteCheyenne Hjelle P.7
I think this reminds us that any sport can be really dangerous, so the only thing that we can do is play it clean and carefully, respecting the rules and enforcing them. Jack and Jenna were unfortunately the ones that had to get injured, so we remember how dangerous it can be and I can't imagine how hard it is to them and their families to go though this, thinking that you're so young and you will never be able to walk again. I admire them too because they have shown they are really strong but i really think all of the people that plays sports should remember all the pros and cons and be aware of them.
ReplyDeleteLucyM 7
I think its sad that those two people got hurt because in girls hockey your not aloud to do anything that dangerous. I also think its sad that she was making a fun razor for jack and then next think you know she gets injured. I think maybe they will get better and not have to deal with the pain anymore.
ReplyDeleteMacKenzie N. 1
I agreee with Sabrina H. I'm sure the people who hurt Jack and Jenna are sure of what they did. I know that something like that can happen really fast. They didn't intend to do something like that, but it's still really bad. I would feel so bad if I would be one of the players, because it was just one check, I mean in Boyshockey they check all the time. How were they supposed to know, that he'll be paralysed from that? I still feel very bad for Jack & Jenna. They just followed their probably favourite sport and got hurt so bad, that they'll never be able to play it again. I know that they can be happy, if they recover a little bit, even if it is just that they can move their arms, like Jack. When you've been told, you're probably never be able to move whether your legs nor your arms again, I'd be shocked. I'd be happy though, if I'd recover little ways, because way worse could have happened. All in all I still think, there"s a reason checking is forbidden in girlshockey and it should stay like that. But I don't think it should be forbidden in boyshockey, because most of the time nothing happens. Most of the players are used to it and if we"re completely true, wie know that it'd be little less fascinating withour checking. So I hope Jack and Jenna get betterand tey learn to live with their injuries!
ReplyDeleteIsabel S. 7
I personally think that if a hockey player was to get injured from checking, the other teams and hockey players should be more careful about checking. Proving that they didn't understand it the first time is when the next player got injured from checking. People say "well you don't know him so why would you care??" and all I have to say is that it would be a lot harder to deal with it if you knew them, so why not support and show the people that do know them, that your willing to be there. I will have these players in my thoughts and prayers, because I honestly don't know how bad this could hurt if it was your brother, sister, neice, daughter, nephew, ex.

I think it's awful how both of these hockey players have been hurt. However, it's great how everybody, whether they play hockey or not, can come together and support someone. I can't believe that the girl that hurt Jenna didn't get a penalty. That just goes to show that the officials need to be a little stricter.
ReplyDeleteMicaela C7
I think it is a terrible thing that both of the hockey players were injured in within the same week. The girl who injured Jenna should have gotten a penalty because you are not aloud to check in girls hockey. The boy who checked Jack should have also gotten a penalty. I think that the people who hit them tho feel bad about. If you think about it, it would be really hard to live with the thought that you paralysed someone. I think that the officials need to be a little sticter in officiating the game.

I think it is sad that both of those players got paraized, and i think there should be more conesequences if someone checks someone from behind cause players could get hurt really bad. And i think the referres could do a better job on making all the calls when someone checks from behind. I feel the coaches responsibility to teach the players that checking from behind is very dangerous.

You know, what happened to those two players is absolutely terrible. But they knew the risks going into the sport. They knew what could happen. And yeah, someone did an illegal move, bu people do them all the time and never gt punished. How is that person supposed to know "oh, hey I'm gonna get in trouble for this" if none of the adult bystanders never speak up and tell them that it is? These kids were doing what they saw everyone else do thinking they could get away with it because everyone else did. And now they know that what they did is wrong and CAN hurt people. I'm sure they feel terrible about what happened. All I'm saying is that it's the adult's job to watch over the game and keep it safe. They need to speak up.
ReplyDeleteLissa F1
As bad as these two accidents were, I think that this should be a warning to coaches, players, and officials that they need to be more cautious of their surroundings. My opinion is to keep checking in Boys high school hockey legal, but ban it from all other levels below them. For the safety of everyone elses children, something to this effect needs to be done.
ReplyDeleteLiana H.3
It's so horrible to hear about things like this happening. And yes, the refs maybe could be a little more strict but also, every hockey player needs to realize that things like these do happen, whether it be on purpose or a total accident, and you take a risk every time you step onto the ice. I feel that coaches should stress how dangerous checking from behind really is. I think a lot of times kids don't realize it until things like this happen but coaches and officials should use incidents like this to make it clear to all players that checking from behind is NOT okay and will not be tolerated at any level.

ReplyDeleteWhat happened to Jack and Jenna was awful. I think this should be a wake up call to all hockey players that checking from behind can cause severe damage to someone. It takes just one move and that can change not only the person your hurting's life, but yours as well. Especially Jack since the doctors said that he was going to be paralyzed. I just found that really upsetting.
ReplyDeleteAnita R. P3
Hearing about two hockey players from MN that got injured is horrible. Those people who hurt Jack and Jenna probably didn't expect that. It just goes to show that it doesn't take much for accidents to happen. Coaches should really talk to their players more about checking and how it can cause serious damage to a person.
ReplyDeleteDanielle F. P3
What happened to these two teenagers playing hockey is so hard to hear especially since the people that hit these hockey players didnt even get a penalty. I think that the girl who hit Jenna should really have to sit a couple of games because first you cant even check to begin with in girls hockey and second the girl checked Jenna from behind which you cant even do in boys hockey. After what has happened I hope that the officials start watching closely and call all the checking in girls hockey because if they dont call it then an injury could happen again. Also I hope that coaches do talk to their teams about the rules of the game. But it is nice to see that Jack and Jenna are recovering very well.
ReplyDeleteLindsay F. P1
I think it's too bad that both Jenna and Jack got hurt, and within the same week, too. I think the officials need to keep a closer eye on these things, since, as we have learned here, breaking the rules can result in an injury. I also think that players everywhere can learn from this. It really doesn't pay to break the rules.
ReplyDeleteShannel D. 3
i think when some one gets hurt like this every one should show support and it is good that there are alot of hockey players/familys there for him. A hit like this should never be done it is not good to hit any one from behind and no one should do that. He has alot of people around that are praying for him so hopefully he recovers!!

ReplyDeleteThis is completely sad. This two teenagers were doing what they more liked: play hockey and because of ilegal movements they are seriously injured. This is really sad and bad because it is not their fault. I think the coaches should talk to the players about not to do ilegal movements because it can happen something like this again...
ReplyDeleteAlberto Gonzalez (7)
My opinon about this is, for sure every sport is dangerous in its ways. When somebody is not following the rules something like this happens, I think when you are playing a sport like hockey you have to play fair, this is the most important thing that you can do. I really don't want to know how the players have to feel which caused the injurys of the two persons. I just hope the are getting better and in the future some people will think before they are playing unfair.
