STAR TRIBUNE
The Grand Forks Herald reports that three students at Red River High School in Grand Forks have been disciplined for wearing Ku Klux Klan costumes -- white robes and pointed hoods -- during the school's North Dakota state hockey tournament game on Friday.
Robb Jeffries of the Grand Forks Herald reported: "During Friday night’s game, a UND student took a photo of the students with his cell phone and posted it on the social media site Twitter. The photo showed the Red River student section during the game. Many students wore white clothing and white face paint, following school tradition that the fans dress in school colors during the state tournament. Called a 'white out,' the custom was popularized by the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets. But three of the students wore white robes and pointed hoods that bore striking resemblance to the costume of KKK members."
Red River principal Kris Arason said in a prepared statement: “We, as a school, are extremely disappointed with the behavior of these three students. This behavior is not a representation of our school or student body.”
Arason did not say what the actions were being taken against the student, who were identified as ninth-graders by other students in the Herald news story.
The Herald also reported: "Fargo Davies is named after Ronald Davies, a former U.S. District judge in Fargo who forced the governor of Arkansas to back down after the governor tried to interfere with the desegregation of Little Rock schools in 1957."

I think that it is a good thing that the three boys got disciplined for wear the Klu Klux Klan costumes. I don't like it that these three boys were dressed like racists. The three boys should of been ashamed for wearing those costumes.
ReplyDeleteAshleyotto p2
It wasn't right for the three ninth graders to dress up as Klu Klux Klan members at the hockey tournament. The KKK is a racist group against a lot of nationalities. I don't really think it was OK for them to go to a hockey tournament like that. They shouldn't be dressed like that at all.

I can not believe that students would go as far as insulting a whole race just for attention. I can not imagine what would happen to a student in Warroad if they did actions similar to these. It would be a complete embarrassment to the town, just like it is for this town.
ReplyDeleteJared Streiff p. 2
I can't believe those people would do that. This means that if people keep doing that we could go into another war,and that's not good.I just think that if people are going to do that they shouldn't be here!!!!They should go to a different world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The klu klux klan is getting outrageous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I MEAN IT THEIR IS NOOO POINT FOR THEM TO DO THAT!!!!!

you don't know what you are talking about. the paid for the game the people who where in the bouth giving out tickets should have stop them if they where dresst like that.

Haley is right. It isn't just the students who are at fault here that had no respect for the feelings of those that were harmed by the Ku Klux Klan, but also the people who saw this behavior and either didn't care or didn't recogize what these kids were doing. Ignorance should not be an excuse when it comes to this issue, especially in a stadium filled with people. What I don't see is why those kids did it. Why would they make that kind of statement? If it was a joke, it was made it pretty poor taste and judgement.

ReplyDeleteThese students clearly have the wrong idea of what's right and what's wrong. Part of me thinks these kids just wanted attention and wanted to be known for doing something gutsy. I can't think of any other reason for them to put on that kind of stunt. They got the punishment they deserved.

I think it was very wrong for the student to dress up in Klu Klux Klan costumes. I agree with Bridget they just wanted to get attention. If they wanted that much attention they could have done something good instead of bad. Because of their actions a lot of people where offended, I am glad they where punished for what they did.
ReplyDeleteGuinevere Henrikson. p. 2
I think their punishment should be little more then that. They have to know they can't do this just for attention. What happen one day, when they do think like Klu Klux klan and make a group? What happens if these groups go against our government and start a war on our land? Bomb our cities? How many people are in this group? I think they should get some jail time and have Homeland Security take over the because we may have a problem. What happens if a group of guys dress normal but got his Klu Klux Klan stuff, and guns in a bag and start shooting at sports events. We never will know. But saying it may happen.

Those kids are ignorant. How could they think that by going as a resemblance to the KKK was funny? Maybe it was a dare? But if that was dare it is just too far. The KKK were horrible, I wonder if those kids even knew what they all did to the other races. People are doing crazy things just to get noticed now a days. What happened to just being original? Or is that too plain? I think that these kids who did this, should get a harsher punishment than the kids who did the Harlem Shake. Also, who knows when they put the KKK outfits on. They could have went in to the stadium normally, then put it on in privacy within the building. Like I said, those kids are ignorant and naive.

those kids obviously were not thinking about what their actions would do to hurt others. they are just stupid for not even thinking about the consiquences that could happen. I think that it could also be because they want attention, or want to be known for doing something really crazy. these kids should have used their heads
ReplyDeletegarrett R. p7
I agree with Bridget. These kids were just being stupid dressing up like the KKK. They obviously just wanted attention. They didnt even take into consideration what this would make there school look like. These kids deserve their punishment.

Wow, I want to know who had this smart idea, because they were not thinking at all! It was completely stupid. You would think these kids would have some common sense...I guess not. The offended so many people. I feel bad for their families and their school because it has to be so embarrassing. Mocking the KKK was a terrible thing to do and I think the punishmet was good one. They deserve it!

The three preteens should have never done that to the players or the teams that played in the hockey tournment. If you are racist then stay at home. Just because you are doesn't mean you should go into pubilc and show it. Also, being racist is showing little respect for your high school team or yourself. If you dressed like that for attention, then maybe you should get some help.

I agree with Bridget. It seemed like it was completely for attention. I also find it absolutly ridiculous that the 3 kids felt the need to dress up in white costumes practically similar to the Klu Klux Klan. They clearly weren't using their heads when they thought about whom it would affect and how it would affect them.

How stupid do you have to be to make a Ku Klux Klan mask then bring it to a public event and think its a good idea. But what I wonder is how they even got into the game with those KKK. With things like this it seems like a few people take it to far and ruin the fun for every one else.

I kind of wonder why the students weren't questioned. What could their motives behind this really be and how could they have thought it was ok in any way? Maybe they hadn't learned about the KKK but if they had and knew all the horrible things that the KKK had done, it's absolutely heartless to do something like this. I wouldn't let anybody come near me with a costume like that. Plus the attention was put on them instead of their hockey team... way to show your school spirit guys...
ReplyDeleteI think this is terrible to see our generation of kids doing such things because they think its a joke. Something like this is not a joke and Im glad that this is taken very seriously these kids should have thought about what they were doing, you cant be doing stuff like this now a days. KKK is a horrible thing in the past and I dont think these kids realized what they were doing and how much trouble it would have caused but in no right mind should someone do this.

This stunt pulled off by these students is not only tremendously stupid, but very racist. I know these kids are looking to pull off a crazy stunt and look cool, but they are ruining a fun event that is a privledge for them to attend and those kids are taking advantage of it. I hope these kids were severely punished for their actions to teach them and others that it isn't a "cool" thing to dress like a racial group. I am basically speechless that anyone would do this in a school event during a hockey tournament.

The stunt that these kids pulled should be severely punished. The KKK are obviously not people that we look up to in life for inspiration. They are a racial group that ruined people's lives. The only reason these boys did this is because they were trying to prove they were cool and show off to the other kids. All this terrible action did for them was show that they have no respect for there school or the teams playing the sport. I understand it was a white out but don't you think you took it a little to far?

This is a horrible thing and the students probably weren't thinking when they did this. If they were doing it for attention, they should have found a different way. The school was obviously going to take care of it, and they did. They were punished for what they did and it was a good thing. However, saying that this would cause a new war or they were going to start shooting at sports events and bombing our cities???!!! That is just outrageous, if these kids were going to take any such action I'm sure they would have done it there. I'm not saying wearing the "white out" clothes that resembled the KKK was a good thing at all, but they obviously weren't thinking. They got punished, learned their lesson, and wars aren't going to be started because of this!!
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that hatred, like racism, is such a common thing still. What upsets me more is that these kids had the nerve to do something as stupid as this. I'm very curious as to know what they were thinking when they did this. I'm glad that these kids were punished. Their actions were unacceptable, and also very disrespectful.

I think that these kids didn't necessarily mean it as a hate crime but as more of prank to be funny for their classmates. These kids must not of thought of the consequences because it not only made them their school and their family look bad this most likely will be spread world wide everyone will now how idiotic these kids acted trying to be funny by committing a hate crime.
ReplyDelete-Steven Olafson 7th
I think that the students deserved a harsher punishment. What they did was extremely racist and was a horrible representation of their school. Even though they only had them on for a few minutes, they knew it was wrong and never should have done it.
